'The war has changed': Internal CDC document warns delta infections likely more severe

This new variation is almost a new virus and is as contagious as chicken pox. I am older and have COPD and diabetes,

The delta variant of the coronavirus appears to cause more severe illness than earlier variants and spreads as easily as chickenpox, according to an internal federal health document that argues officials must “acknowledge the war has changed.”....

One of the slides states that there is a higher risk among older age groups for hospitalization and death relative to younger people, regardless of vaccination status. Another estimates that there are 35,000 symptomatic infections per week among 162 million vaccinated Americans......

The CDC’s revised mask guidance stops short of what the internal document calls for. “Given higher transmissibility and current vaccine coverage, universal masking is essential to reduce transmission of the Delta variant,” it states.

The document makes clear that vaccination provides substantial protection against the virus. But it also states that the CDC must “improve communications around individual risk among [the] vaccinated” because that risk depends on a host of factors, including age and whether someone has a compromised immune system.

The document includes CDC data from studies showing that the vaccines are not as effective in immunocompromised patients and nursing home residents, raising the possibility that some at-risk individuals will need an additional vaccine dose.

My son just joined the Pfzier booster trial and got his first shot on Monday. I intend to try to get a booster as soon as possible even if I have to convince a doctor to give me one "off-label". This new variation is scary

don’t necessarily go in for a test. I,imagine the estimates are based on other hard data they have, and extrapolating from there.

So they should re-emphasize testing now that they know symptomatic/asymptomatic vaccinated COVID victims can transmit the disease and breakthrough infections are higher than was originally predicted based on the Alpha old news.

Also, they should put mask wearing back in the guidance.

I'm spitting into the wind here.

They're anonymous....
Like at-home pregnancy test

A week ago, we purchased the Binax tests while on vacation and they were negative.

When I still didn't feel better, I decided to do the PCR test at Walgreens. It was a PITA. I had to schedule a day ahead of time, submit my insurance info ahead of time etc.....Much easier just to run to the store and buy a test kit.

The Delta Variant is basically equal to chicken pox but clearly less contagious than small pox

Anecdotal reports.

I just wish they would stop calling everything short of hospitalization mild! It’s ok to have a mild form at home but also a moderate and moderate to severe for home recovery with severe being reserved for hospitalizations and critical for being put on a ventilator.

Just stop calling everything mild!

stomping new outbreaks immediately as they popped up, if the tRump administration and state governments had followed the CDC's recommendations from the beginning. It'd be mostly controlled now if enough people had gotten the vaccine this administration rushed to the nation and of course followed the CDC's instructions.

As it is, we're grownups, and we have the enormous blessing of miracle vaccines. We all know what we have to do individually to protect ourselves and stop this new surge of pandemic.

From when they told us to just wash our hands and we would all be fine. And by no means, they told us, should we wear a mask.

Then they told us that hydrochloroquinine was worth investigation.

Then 3 feet of distancing was just dandy because it wasn't airborn.

Then we should mask, then not mask, then mask, then not mask, then mask.

Then vaxxed people couldn't spread Covid.

Then teachers don't need to be vaxxed for schools to open safely.

I could go on and on and on about their recommendations that were premature, uninformed and simply wrong.

Their statements and actions on this are out there for all to see.

I usually agree with your posts, but I strongly disagree with you on this issue.

And why are they keeping this information secret? Why did this have to be "leaked"? What is the point of that?

The tRump/Republican director was there to make sure the CDC did not do its job and to set this progressive-government agency up as a target for blame. After all:

The Republicans deliberately and opportunistically spread this virus into a pandemic.
The Republicans refused to take standard steps to contain and control it.
The Republicans blocked the standard steps by others and refused assistance to others fighting it.
The pandemic didn't enamble more Republicans to get elected after all, but billionaire wealth increased 30%.
The Republicans are STILL at it.

When the Biden administration took over and restored the CDC's function in late January, the pandemic was raging out of control with hundreds of thousands dead and dying. The delta variant had already started spreading in India, though very little was known about it yet.

Why the constant conflation of Biden's CDC with its subversion by the Republican administration?

Just a successful RW swiftboating campaign against Democrats, this time via the CDC? Deflection of righteous rage away from Repulicans and onto Democrats? Could it be some people still don't believe there's a real difference between Democrats and Republicans?

Maybe some fear-driven kill-the-messenger anger thrown in as this gets really serious?

Those who don't know who the good guys and bad guys are defeat Democrats elect Republicans. That political reality is why so many work so hard to keep people confused about who's who.

Btw, the CDC are good guys. Their magnificent history and mission should be a clue.
