I suppose they don't want to start with that when the real concern is getting a first dose in new people.
This might be little like the mask recommendations early on. I think they thought masks were a good idea but didn't dare say so. We didn't have the masks and people were already causing problems buying them up. If the CDC and Fauci weren't totally honest about that one, I'll let it slide because they really had no choice.

(5,294 posts)In March, the rollout of vaccine in Oregon was spotty at best. As I'm a fat, 68-year-old diabetic with a history of susceptibility to infections, my retired RN wife wanted me vaccinated yesterday, so she was scouring sites to find where I could be treated.
We found a Costco in a red county 250 miles away, so I drove down on a Wednesday afternoon, spent the night in a local hotel, got my shot the next morning, and drove back home.
The shot they gave me was a J&J, which despite the distance involved disappointed me. I've already left a message with my PCP to see about getting the Pfizer.

(13,552 posts)With the refuseniks around I'm being forced back into seclusion. Plans to see kids and grandkids are on hold.
Bring it on. I'll even pay for it if I have to.

(13,584 posts)But I expect to see it spreading bad here before long and that will kill the donations too.
I just topped off my hoard that I was hoping to be running down some by now. If COVID was beat like I hoped by now, I'd be enjoying about four months of real low grocery bills.

(20,998 posts)... a small group of acquaintances have already started to hack their vaccines. Several persons I am familiar with have already received a third Pfizer vaccine. Before anyone goes "get the un-vaccinated first," they have made sure that their vaccines came from a surplus in the area (low-vaccine, extremely conservative part of Arizona).
One person, who got his full Pfizer full dosing cycle approximately 6 months ago, received his third shot, and a day or two later had "five times the reaction" he did after the second dose.
Some people ARE starting to hack their vaccines.

(128,966 posts)the vaccine by getting a 3rd shot, which is not currently authorized under the EUA. I think Pfizer wants to submit data to offer a booster under a new EUA and there are a couple trials going on now with people getting boosters including "mixed" ones like this -
https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/nih-clinical-trial-evaluating-mixed-covid-19-vaccine-schedules-begins
What the above trial is doing is if a participant is someone who received -
1.) Janssen (J&J) 1-shot, will get a Moderna booster
2.) Pfizer 2-shot, will get a Moderna booster
3.) Moderna 2-shot, will get a Moderna 3rd shot
I have read posts on DU of people who have anecdotally been going to get a 3rd shot on their own although I think I saw at least one might have actually volunteered for a trial too, and that is an option for people who want a 3rd shot.
Locations should be tracking vaccinations for their states but then I suppose that depends on how robust their database systems are and whether there is any cross-checking that is do-able and if so, whether it would even be done. There was paperwork that had to be completed to even get a shot as it is, which is pretty standard for any vaccine, including something like the annual flu shot.

(44,973 posts)Right now the third doses are not authorized.
So if you admit you were vaccinated you will be refused. But if you lie and say you were not, will they be able to figure it out?
BumRushDaShow
(128,966 posts)Hell... During the earliest distribution of vaccines here in Philly, 1/2 of them, literally 10s of thousands of doses, were being given to people who lied their way in to getting one by claiming to be city residents and weren't, and those giving the vaccines were not turning people away at that time (naturally). The city at the time, and even today, gets its doses directly from the federal government and not as part of the state of PA's regular distribution to all other counties. Later they started requiring proof of city residency.
I think for those who really really do want it though, they could consider participating in one of the trials. Of course that would probably also mean that they would need to do all the follow-up data collection stuff (including probably blood tests and other vitals) that goes with being in a drug/device/biologic trial.

I remember hearing the idea of getting a third shot of the other one, like of you had two Pfizer getting a third moderna. I wonder if that is a good idea.
