I have two working TV's in my home. One upstairs, one downstairs.
I have several other cable wall jacks, one in each room, that I have not used in years.
This means that there is a lot of Coax cable in my walls, running into my basement.
My big TV downstairs crapped out due to a cable problem that was not related to the cable box near the TV. I went without that TV for about 4 months, because I did not want any service people in my home due to the pandemic. We just watched the little TV in my upstairs office.
Several years ago, I spent several days in my basement tidying up all of the Coax cable down there. I cut and spiced cable that was too long and therefore hanging down from the ceiling. I used cable clamps to nail the cable neatly to the joists. I mounted a 2 x 8 piece of lumber under the staircase that has all the the splitters neatly attached.
Anyway, I finally decided to call for a service technician to diagnose the problem with the big TV. I showed him where everything was in the basement. He was down there about a half an hour. when he came back up, he said everything was working, and we tested the TV. It was working great. I asked him what the problem turned out to be, and he said he needed to replace a connector on one of the cables.
I went into the basement after he left. There were about 10 loose cables just hanging from the basement ceiling at various locations. This guy had just CUT each cable that was not associated with the upstairs or downstairs TV, and left them hanging there. This means that I can not hook up any other TV's to the jacks in the other rooms. So there are these hanging cables, scraps of wire all over the basement floor, and a tool on the floor that I gave him to use that he did not return to where he saw me retrieve it from.
I fixed everything myself. Had to put new connectors on the cable ends that he cut, had to figure out which cable was for which jack, had to re-do the board that has the splitters on it, etc.
The worse part? This was the second time this has happened. Even though I was pissed, I didn't call the company. It was easier and less stressful just to fix it myself.
Nothing works right anymore, and no one gives a shit anymore.

(17,004 posts)It helps keep them honest and Ive learned a lot about how things work. Ive never had one give me a hard time about asking a lot of questions. Some seem to enjoy sharing their knowledge.

(17,426 posts)But with the pandemic, I thought it best to leave the room. He was mask adverse. Told me he was vaxxed, said I didn't care and he needed to wear a mask in my home. He went out to his truck to get one, came back and said he's all out of masks. Gave him one to wear. Guy was a bit sketchy to be honest.

(17,004 posts)I swear its that kind of stuff that has led to me learning how to do a lot of things. Im installing a new bathroom vanity with a wall mount faucet. Need to get the plumbing roughed in for when the counter top guys come. I want to leave some wiggle room so the faucet ends up over the center of the sink.

(17,426 posts)Always better to do it yourself if you can. You get great satisfaction by figuring it out yourself, and if you can't figure it out, you get satisfaction by knowing that you tried.
Nobody will treat your house better than you will.

(15,212 posts)That guy can't be allowed to go around cutting every cable he doesn't think it needed. That's wanton destruction of property, not just a lazy approach to figuring out a problem.

(1,109 posts)Daughter and I have relied on the same (city) water company for many years. I use my bank's auto-pay and she has always paid by check; so I tried to re-set daughter's account (by phone) so that she could auto-pay by way of her bank.
Dumb-ass water company clerk: Sorry, but we DON'T do that AND we have NEVER allowed that. I didn't try to explain!

Now that the next generation have all gone white collar, it's difficult to find reliable workers. Although yesterday, I paid a young entreprenuer with a community college degree in landscape design, to increased the size of my garden by 2 feet and he dug it by hand. The heat index was 105 but he worked his butt off for 4 hours. He's a keeper.
