A Newsmax reporter on Friday left White House Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre baffled after asking a bizarre question about whether White House officials were personally conducting tests to make sure the delta variant had become the dominant strain of the novel coronavirus.
During the Friday White House press briefing, the Newsmax reporter asked, "How do you know test whether it's the dominant strain in the area when people just test whether they're COVID-positive?"
"We don't test it, we listen to public health and scientists and they tell us it's the delta variant," Jean-Pierre said.
The reporter then asked if the health experts explained their "process" for testing.

(18,241 posts)Genomic sequencing is conducted and that data is reported to the CDC.
As the pandemic progresses and new variants of SARS-CoV-2 have emerged, it is critical for the United States and other countries to sequence and analyze virus samples. Sequence data provides us with information about the genetic diversity, spread, and evolution of the virus to assess the impact on current efforts to control the pandemic, including the impact on vaccines. CDC is enhancing sequencing efforts by collaborating with state and local public health laboratories (PHLs) and partners, such as the Association of Public Health Laboratories, to increase the number of specimens that are sequenced as part of the National SARS-CoV-2 Strain Surveillance (NS3) program. CDC is also increasing sequencing capacity through contracts with commercial diagnostic laboratories. These collaborative sequencing efforts will provide a better understanding of the SARS-CoV-2 variants that exist in the US.
