Two Florida mayors have announced mask and vaccine mandates in their counties this week, despite Governor Ron DeSantis refusing to impose statewide pandemic measures.
In Miami-Dade county, indoor county facilities will once again require masks, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava's office announced on Wednesday. Levine Cava tweeted that the county has seen an "alarming rise" in cases and that hospitalizations are increasing there.
In Orange County, where Disney World and Universal Orlando Resorts are located, Mayor Jerry Demings has ordered that all 4,200 non-unionized county employees be fully vaccinated by the end of September.
Demings' announcement was part of a local state of emergency declared on Wednesday, and he also urged all residents to wear masks, regardless of their vaccination status. In a news conference on the same day, he said that cases in the county had reached an "all-time high."

I hope lots more mayors and other local officials do the same. DeSantis is nuts. Refusing to enact any statewide mandates is bad enough. Trying to tell mayors, school superintendents, etc., that they can't make any local rules for their own areas is the act of a megalomaniac.

(19,186 posts)to further the political ambitions of a short, squat, fascist asshole named DeSantis. He simply cannot have their deaths being counted accurately, and having his horrible decisions for Florida's citizens become public knowledge.

(19,186 posts)When I was a kid my Dad and Mom would pack us all in the car and take a trip to Florida every March. We were expected to keep up with our homework, but we had a week off from school.
I remember Florida as being a very nice place. A little slower moving than New York, but friendly people and a nice break from the north's icy grip. Spanish moss everywhere, palm trees, and all the beaches were littered with beautiful shells, and shark's teeth by the bucket full. No plastic, no red tide, no fishing nets and other assorted garbage washing up. Pristine.
We never noticed the greedy land developers, the greedy sugar cane growers, the greedy, polluting phosphate miners, and the crooked politicians.
Florida was still relatively unpolluted and the massive development had just started. Florida was still wild, and unspoiled.
Within 10 years all hell broke loose and it rapidly began to change. For the worse. Much worse. The greed-heads took over everything.
I often think about those days, and mourn their passing. Now, I have no plans to ever visit the state again. It's such a cesspool of criminal developers, crooked politicians, rude tourists, and a haven for drugs and criminals. People are insane, and the paradise I used to see in Florida is lost. Lost forever.

(35,933 posts)can run it their way no matter who's in office. They are entrenched, I tell you.
Get rid of the former head of the national chamber of commerce, Vern Buchanan of Sarasota; get rid of Rubio, Gaetz and its statehouse Republicans, and Florida will still be economically unregulated.
Even then, this state's GDP doesn't depend on honest political policies. It's GDP is still based on the top income sectors of 1. tourism, 2. agriculture, 3. "international" trade (let me guess, laundering through land investments? laundering of gun and drug trafficking?) 4. aerospace (NASA?) and 5. Life Sciences (university scientific research). People here have even given up on honest dissent or talk of ridding FL of its longstanding endemic corruption.
