https://www.statnews.com/2021/06/10/as-more-kids-get-long-covid-doctors-still-cant-predict-who-is-at-risk/At 14 years old, Kate Dardis knows what pain feels like and how to work through it. An accomplished gymnast accustomed to training four hours a day, she has met a competitor this year that she cant beat with exercise or sheer willpower yet.
Rarely sick before a stomachache kept her home from school for three days in October, the Bloomington, Ill., eighth-grader was hit by a headache in January that still hasnt loosened its grip. Her heart races. Her body aches. She gets winded climbing stairs and feels dizzy when she changes position. Concentrating on schoolwork is difficult remotely and exhausting in person.
Kate learned last month from a team of doctors at Boston Childrens Hospital that she is suffering from the post-Covid syndrome better known as long Covid. Her Covid-19 test was negative last fall after some teammates and coaches at her gym tested positive, but in February an antibody test ordered by her pediatrician confirmed she had been infected with Covid-19.

And kids will be crammed into schools soon!

(206,520 posts)The prevailing belief in most places (even here in New York, rescinding the year-plus long mask mandate) was that it was "over" - just in time for the deadly Delta variant, which we're now told isn't going to be the last.

(57,073 posts)The Shelby County Schools, which I believe the largest district in this state, has spent their Fed covid $ on a very high end air purification system for every K-12 school. To the tune of $24 million.

Although the article raises questions, trust me that they did the very best for the kids that they could. I'm guessing those objecting to this expenditure were furious they weren't allowed to bilk the funds for personal gain.
And all this with the air filtration was done before delta emerged, threatening kids greatly!
Dr. Joris Ray is the Superintendent & is exceptionally pro-active in advocating for student well being!
Last year, with very little time, due to the uncertainty of covid, this huge district was very pro-active! They purhased laptops for every single student, ensured internet access for every family, & even payed electric bills to ensure each student's capacity for continuity of remote learning.
All of the schools went fully virtual because of the covid nightmare.
When they were being heavily pressured by the qpuke gov to have kids return to in-person learning, the district spent a ton of $ putting a plexi-glass shield around every single socially distanced desk in case they had to make kids return. They never did last year, despite the plantation owner mentality of the qpuke gov threatening to pull something like $70 or $80 mill in education funding if kids were not physically in classrooms, but somehow common sense prevailed & kids were not forced back into the petri dish schools.
Dr. Joris Ray is a living, breathing angel advocating for kids!
It might well be that his direction & love for kids, keeping them learning remotely, is why covid #s weren't much higher in this region. I think I read somewhere that there are over 100,00 kids in the system.
I've heard rednecks moaning abour Dr. Ray, what an "idiot" he is, blah, blah, blah. Great indication that Dr. Ray is a stellarly gifted intellectual who happens to have more pigment in his skin & who doesn't bow to pressure from this qpuke gov or legislators.
Now this huge district is confident that the measures they have taken will be adequate to fully protect students & staff. I sure hope they are correct!
Still makes me nervous but I do believe at the first sign kids aren't safe, they will return to virtual learning.
And, on the upside, if students aren't dropping like flies from delta, it will be fun to read qbout qpuke heads exploding.
I'm a huge advocate for education but, in the grand scheme of each student's life, I personally believe the risks of delta (so far) far outweigh the benefits of in-person learning.
Keeping fingrrs crossed that this air purification system & mask mandate for all students, staff, & visitors will keep everyone safe! 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
