LA Times - Far-right movements including QAnon, virus skeptics linked to Newsom recall

There can be no mistake that the threat of a successful recall is very real in California, because this is a special election, which are usually low turnout affairs. Indeed, in California, there are laws that prohibit many local governments from setting elections on irregular dates to approve ballot measures with little public oversight. Yet, Republicans who claim to be against election fraud have schemed to schedule special recall election that takes place less then a year before the normal gubernatorial primaries. In other words, we are already going to have a regular gubernatorial election, which is why Republicans are counting on low turnout with only extremists motivated to vote.

This recall election is a fraud designed to disenfranchise millions of Californians being perpetrated by an extremist right wing, minority. Following the City of Bell scandal in 2010, the Legislature passed bills to outlaw local governments from scheduling these types of off-calendar elections. Yet, leave it to extremists to take advantage of the obscure language of California's constitution to steal the Governorship in a state that Democrats have overwhelmingly won.

Of course, once Newsome is recalled by a tiny minority of the population and replaced by a right wing extremist with an even smaller share of the vote, people may die as the extremist tries to impose a right wing, anti-vax agenda to placate the fringe that got him elected.

SACRAMENTO — As the pandemic continues to shutter businesses, close schools and upend lives in California, Gov. Gavin Newsom has become a target of angry frustration for some, driving a grassroots effort to recall him from office. What once started as a pipe dream is beginning to look like a political threat for the Democratic governor.

But a Times investigation found that recall campaign leaders, seeking to capitalize on the darkening public mood, allied with radical and extreme elements early on to help collect signatures. Those included groups promoting distrust of government, science and medicine; peddlers of QAnon doomsday conspiracies; “patriots” readying for battle and one organization allied with the far-right extremist group, the Proud Boys.

The recall gave those fringe factions a higher profile and a shared villain. They helped energize the campaign with large and often inflammatory rallies over masks, in support of Trump and against the election they falsely say was stolen from the former president — ripe venues to harvest petition signatures.

Many supporters of the recall are not extremists and may not be aware of the far-right groups involved with the effort. But with the violent insurgency at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, organizers are grappling with the consequences of their alliances. They now insist the extremists don’t represent the values of the recall movement but continue to associate with them, amid a national debate about how far is too far when it comes to winning in politics.
