"SNIP.....
Texas Tribune: Susan Wrights campaign had reasons to feel good Tuesday morning, coming off a tele-rally with former President Donald Trump the night before and armed with internal polling showing she had a comfortable lead over her fellow Republican opponent. But anxiety set in as the day went on and her campaign saw higher-than-expected turnout. Then, a couple hours before polls closed, her consultant, Matt Langston, got a call.
It was from a campaign worker at a polling place, and they said the kinds of voters who were showing up had definitely changed. How do you know that? Langston asked.
Said the worker: Because theyre all wearing masks.

(22,292 posts)This was a runoff from a special election, so the original election was just a list of Republicans and Democrats, not a primary.
I may be wrong here but since that was not a regular primary, Democrats may have been able to vote in this run off. That would explain the masking.
I heard this morning that the winner was a more moderate Republican.
In a runoff for a regular primary, anyone who did not vote for the other party in the primary can vote in the runoff.
If there had only been one Democrat in the special election, there would have been one of each in the runoff. There were 8 Democrats so the vote was split 8 ways. If Jana had been the only Democrat she could have had an additional 3000 to 5000 votes. I don't know what the State Party was thinking to let all those people file for that race.

(25,801 posts)They don't have the same rules as primary runoffs.
No record is kept of which party someone is voting for in a special election, so they don't have the same rule as a primary runoff.

(2,770 posts)When they vote in a primary, they choose a party which is then stamped on their voter ID card. If there's a primary runoff, if they voted in a particular party, they have to stick they to that one.
New year, new voter ID cards, no primary until next year, so they aren't members of a political party at all, supposedly.
As soon as I heard that a moderate R won, I had a suspicion. Too bad the GOP isn't wising up.
