Interesting: Here's how much Olympic athletes earn for winning medals in different countries

While the International Olympic Committee does not pay prize money to medalists, many countries offer monetary rewards to their athletes for the number of medals they win at the Olympics.

Here’s a look at how much money Olympic medalists from 12 countries could take home, based on data compiled from various national Olympic committees, sport associations as well as personal finance site Money Under 30. https://

5. This is the Olympics. You're meant to compete for the sake of sport, not cash

While the UK does not offer specific medal bonuses, it does devote £125 million ($162 million USD) of government and lottery funds to Olympic and Paralympic sports each year, some of which goes to annual athlete stipends. Current funding amounts by sport are listed here. UK Olympic medalists get a stipend of $36,000 USD per year to train and compete.

In the UK, winning medals also secures better funding for your sport for the future.

7. So the media gets to decide what the world thinks of countries with its headlines?

Your position is that if the media writes a story, then nations are "cheapskates". Don't let your mind be made up for you by a hack.

regularly been paid appearance fees for meets in Europe for decades. It's no secret.

God! How do you think these top, world-class athletes train for years to get ready for nat'l championships and the Olympics? They get paid. That whole "amateur" thing about the Olympics is an ideal that's long been outmoded.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

9. I'm not saying people don't get paid appearance fees. I'm not saying they don't get paid

as professionals. I'm saying your belief that countries (rather than commercial meetings) are "cheapskates" if they don't pay as much as others for one performance, and your basis for this being "if a couple articles list the amounts, it must be true that they are cheapskates" is wrong, and that you are so easily influenced by a few articles is disappointing.

And, of course, this is about the Olympics, not just track and field athletics. This includes archers, badminton players, target shooters ...

in a discussion board is a firmly held believe it should be apparent to most that it's just an off-hand, joking remark...I mean come on, the US is the wealthiest nation in the world. The disparity in fees was just surprising to me. No big deal. Perhaps I should've use the sarcasm gif.

By the time you got round to "some people have no clue", it was quite obvious you were serious, and it was too late to claim "sarcasm".

those in that participating in the Olympics hasn't been the amateur, "for the love of it ideal" that some people still seem to think...it hasn't been that for decades. But please carry on, think what you will.
