Floridas ban on mask mandates came under increasing scrutiny from public health officials on Sunday as the surging Delta variant pushed new daily cases of Covid-19 in the state to a record high.
The 21,683 new cases reported on Saturday was Floridas highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic. It came a day after Ron DeSantis signed an executive order prohibiting school districts from requiring staff and students to wear masks.
On Sunday, the state broke its previous record for hospitalisations, also set more than a year ago.
Dr Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), told CNNs State of the Union he was baffled by the prohibition on requiring masks in schools, the latest in a series of autocratic moves by DeSantis including outlawing vaccine passports and stripping local authorities of the power to issue restrictions or mandates.

(31,261 posts)Publix (his friendly grocer) issued a mask mandate for ALL employees on Friday. Disney issued a get vaccinated or else mandate to non-unionized employees and is working with the union to extend it to unionized employees.
Big business got a taste of how profitable having an open society again can be. They are not going to let no vaccination without a medical reason boneheads mess things up.

(13,915 posts)All the ones I've heard about are requiring proof of vaccination to board ships. Carnival, for instance, is going with the CDC recommendation of 100% vaccinated for the crew and> 95% vaccinated passengers (with the 5% of unvaccinated slots being reserved for children who aren't eligible yet for the vaccine and a handful of adults with medical reasons for not getting the vaccine). You show your CDC issued vaccine card, or equivalent if you don't live in the US, or you don't get on the ship. AND you're required to mask up while in the terminal.
The current governor of Florida is such a fucking idiot, and hasn't seemed to realize that the majority of people he's killing are his base.

(31,261 posts)My guess is he faces Charlie Crist. Crist is a former two term Governor (as a republican) and can draw in many of the traditional republicans and blue-dog democrats that normally vote for republicans. And if Val Demmings is taking on Lil Marco for the US Senate seat, African American voters are likely to turn out big, that should boost the Democratic nominee (who I believe will be Crist).
DeSantis is really arrogant, but he really doesnt have a lot of room to mess up, certainly not what he think he has.

(26,115 posts)Cruise lines can NOT exclude the unvaccinated in FL, the appellate court ruled this and the cruise lines haven't appealed.
So, their plan is a dual track which will fail spectacularly. They want to separate the 2 classes, unvaccinated have to show up day of cruise with proof of negative test within 72 hours. They will be separated and tested again before going on board, given different colored wristbands, and be tested every few days and must wear masks and social distance. They aren't allowed at the buffets, have segregated seating. They aren't allowed to disembark with the vaccinated and can't go to the big shows onboard. Maybe they will have other shows for them, but this wasn't stated.
Of course, this will be a total shit show and devolve really quickly when the unvaccinated refuse to cooperate - which will 100% happen. Then it will spread because unvaccinated are asses and potential murderers and they will not follow instructions. They will provide bogus vaccination reports, or will refuse to get tested and for sure will refuse the masks and make huge trouble in the dining rooms.
Anyone who goes on these is crazy, IMO.

(14,624 posts)is just part of why my adopted daughter is taking up temporary residence in Tennessee during the school year to put my youngest grandchild in the preschool my kids and my first grandchild attended. There are some other reasons, including the sad state of Florida's preschool system and the exceedingly high cost of good private preschools (mostly either Catholic or Jewish) in her area. Baby P starts next week and is wildly excited to be going to school where Auntie Betsy and Uncle Adam went.

(2,010 posts)Which is still a lot of people. Florida is the 3rd largest state with 22 million people.
That's 6.8 to 8.8 million unvaccinated Floridians, if 30-40% refuse it.
Lots of them are getting covid now, along with a few vaccinated folks with breakthrough infections.
They are hurting. My immunocompromised cousin just got out of the hospital after 10 days, and then her boyfriend who'd been home with it wasn't doing well was admitted to the hospital.
He's a trumpet, as my cousin calls him. She isn't but she loves him anyway. It's hard to relax and recover while worrying about loved ones. She's emotionally and physically exhausted. Lots are in Florida.
Yet she was raging about her idiot governor, so I agree it's a good time to highlight his failures in this and other areas.
My thoughts and prayers go out to her and those who are suffering with it. It seems that this surge has spurred more people to get vaccinated, so that's a good thing. There will be those across the US that won't get vaccinated, and they're the ones most likely to die from it. I don't wish that on them. I wish they recover and get vaccinated and get with the program. Some will.
