Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe "secret plan" for August 13th?
They have dropped hints in the last week or two. For example, Mark Meadows talking about meetings at the Bedminster Golf Club with Trump and "Cabinet members". What do you think he meant by that?
Trump had another meeting with some third-string Republicans yesterday at the same golf course. A dollar to a donut that they talked about witnesses refusing subpoenas before the Select Committee?
Their primary aim is to discredit the Select Committee and to attack Nancy Pelosi and Liz Cheney while doing so.
In a few days, Trump will announce that Republicans cannot support Joe Biden or the present government in Washington. By then, he will have talked to many influential Republicans, including Congressmen and Senators, and will advise them that if they wish to retain their seats, they will need to denounce the last election as illegitimate or rigged. Most of these meetings will likely take place at this same golf course?
By August the 13th, Trump and his "Republican" followers will be ready to announce that they are representing a "government in exile". They will oppose everything coming from this illegitimate White House. Do not believe anything that comes from the "fake news" or from the RINOs. If it doesn't come directly from Trump or his "Cabinet", it cannot be believed.
This is the modus operandi.

What's that?
He only cares that his supporters see him as the "President", and not Joe Biden. He doesn't care about the Supreme Court or the Generals. He doesn't need them. They have shown they will do nothing.

Something like that. Mainly because if a democrat puts his feet on a desk the MEDIA will have heads exploding everywhere...a con can openly take the side of the KGB over the CIA and very little will be said by the media.

(115,406 posts)What would happen if he had his supporters and most of the Republican establishment behind him, if he declared a "government in exile"?

First Speaker
(4,858 posts)...even *some* sort of half-assed action on the 13th could, at the least, polarize the country further, and further radicalize the GOP. No, they can't "seize power"...but they can make defending their action--whatever the fuck it may be--a litmus test for all GOP candidates. That would be bad enough.

I think it is his plan to make his followers believe he is the head of a government in exile because their votes were stolen and the election was rigged.
I think this is "their" secret plan but I do not believe it will work.

(3,833 posts)How many of those to whom Trump talks will fall in line with him, and, are they Republicans who will make any difference?
Here in Virginia, the Republican gubernatorial candidate is a political newcomer. He came from The Carlyle Group where he made a few zillion $$ buying companies, striping them, shipping jobs overseas. When he was nominated, Trump was first to endorse him and he is playing up the Trump endorsement. Virginia has not elected a Republican for the past two election cycles, and Democrat took over the General Assembly two years ago. While the Democrat likely will be elected governor, we VA Dems are working our asses off to win.
We won't know until Nov, but, if the Repub loses in VA, it won't do Trump any good.

Of course, he will be nothing officially. But, what will his followers believe? Will they continue to believe that he is the true President? That the election was rigged?
In so doing, Trump maintains control of the Republican Party and his cult. Also, he maintains control over the scam of stealing money from the suckers.
It is not a trivial matter.
We shall see the "plan" more clearly in the days ahead.

(912 posts)overthrow the duly elected President/gov't, even given the penchant of this of this motley crew to royally screw up everything they touch, and in plain sight? This needs to be taken seriously. They are promoting sedition at the very least. And for who? This crazy mofo? One would hope that the security apparatus in this country is taking the threat seriously at some level. (And no, they aren't about to broadcast to us, the country at large, what they know or their assessment of the actual threat and their plan to thwart it.) Dump is a clown. We all know it. Yet somehow we all underestimated this fool once, and he somehow ascended to the presidency in 2015. "Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me." Do not underestimate this would be King - or more to the point, the monied interests that are the Kingmakers. Doing so is at our own peril.

(3,833 posts)We live in rural VA. Wife has a doc's appointment two hours away in Richmond, early afternoon, Friday, August 13.
My county and a couple of the counties through which we pass to get to/from Richmond are Trump country . . . and I have BIDEN bumper stickers on my vehicle.
If they start any shit on August 13, out of an abundance of caution, we are going to/from the doc's office heavily armed . . . this is not a joke . . . will have semi-auto pistols, pump 12 gauge, and AR-15 in case we run into any Trumpsters who want a civil war.

(7,920 posts)Why hasn't the GOP been marked as a terrorist organization and why isn't it treated as such, why hasn't Trump faced the music for Un-American activities and sedition, collusion with the enemy, etc?
There is no such thing as a 'Government in exile' on American soil, now if Trump was in Mexico, or France, and wanted to declare himself such, he could. And should.
As is, Trump lost the election. There is no way he can have any pretense at being an alternate semi-legitimate government.
The head of the snake . . .
Honestly, Trump needs to be neutered. Too many still follow him, don't see him for what he is.
If it is Al Capone style, through tax evasion, it's a fairly weak avenue, but it would have to do.
Once he is locked up, all the follower snakes will slither away and deny their own history.

(115,406 posts)...on January 6th, it will not be possible for one Party to hold another Party accountable. They understand that.
In order to hold Trump and his confederates accountable, there would need to be members from both Parties that agree to a verifiable reality.
It is simply not possible to jail political opponents unless there is a consensus of the crime.

In this regard think back to when they were accusing Obama of running a deep state shadow government. So yeah of course they are going to try this. They will fail miserably but nonetheless they will try. If even jist to grift more money.

(115,406 posts)Once that hand is played, it is a whole new ballgame.
It depends on how aggressive the DOJ will be in addressing the problem.
Hopefully, the rule of law will prevail. Subpoenas from the US Congress must be obeyed or there is no rule of law.
brooklynite
(96,882 posts)It doesn't matter what Trump people did when he was President; he's not and the Justice Dept/US Marshalls/Sergeant at Arms of the House won't refuse to enforce the subpoenas.
kentuck
(115,406 posts)Common sense would suggest they would cooperate with any subpoenas.
But, if they believe their argument is strong enough to persuade their "half" that the requests are not legitimate because the election was not "legitimate", they may choose to fight it out in court?
They have ignored the laws for so long, it is difficult to imagine the laws of this country ever working as they did before.
