(38,216 posts)"...Reuters reporter Sudipto Ganguly said he asked Djokovic the following question: "Novak, you would've heard about Simone Biles yesterday talking about mental health and the pressure of performing. You are in this position going for the Golden Slam, you know, there is no more pressure on a tennis player than you currently. Can you speak a bit about it?"
Djokovic responded by referencing his work on the tennis court, a mention that is omitted in the social media post, but which we highlight here in bold..."
I'm not a fan of Novak Djokovic, but part of the criticism is really unfair.
He has also been very supportive of Osaka and others, and has been a player advocate.
Mixed doubles players ALWAYS know that if they team up with a top singles player, they may have to default. ND's partner was not a top singles or doubles player, and it is very unlikely that they would have won a medal had she been paired with any other Serbian male player on the team. He was clearly exhausted by the end of the week, and may have been injured, as he claimed.
I agree that there is no excuse for racquet tossing or any other unsportsmanlike conduct.

(95,522 posts)He threw a fugging temper tantrum on the court, smashing two rackets and slamming a ball in to a sideline judges neck. He took his teammate, a woman out of her quest for a medal by his actions. A child like tantrum. And he walks away unscathed.
Biles on the other hand was praised by many and vilified by more. She was called un-American as she quietly with grace and style removed herself from the games. Then again she is a black woman so of course she is treated by the press differently. Novack got away scott free.
Biles was indeed referenced in the report.
Mostly false is not false.

(38,216 posts)but the question he/she asked of Djokovic was how would YOU handle the pressure now on YOU?
Sheshe, you know that the context and facts matter. The post in your OP included a VERY unfair characterization of Djokovic's answer and of his withdrawing from the mixed doubles.
And I said very clearly in my response that I agreed throwing racquets was bad sportsmanship--you quoted it. What is your issue with that? That I was not dramatic enough?
i do NOT like Djokovic, but I do not like anyone's being treated unfairly, and I said that PART of this criticism was unfair.
The issue of how Biles was treated is a separate issue. I completely agree with you that the attacks and criticism on her by rightwingers and others were and are horrible.

(95,522 posts)I DID not say it was by Novack.

(38,216 posts)she isn't handling pressure well etc. when HIS answer had NOTHING to say about her.
If the issue is that the media and/or fans let him off the hook too easily for his bad sportsmanship of throwing racquets, then that ought to be the focus of the discussion, not putting words or implications in his mouth. I think that is is definitely a fair question, especially given racism in tennis. If it makes anyone feel any better, he is NOT nearly as widely liked and admired as Federer and Nadal.
