Tamyra Mensah-Stock became the second American woman to win a wrestling gold medal with victory in the 68kg freestyle category on Tuesday.

The reigning world champion appeared to sustain a leg injury 40 seconds into the six-minute bout but recovered to win 4-1 on points, spinning her opponent over, scoring points from a pair of takedowns and defending solidly as the seconds ticked away.

The result means that Nigeria’s first Olympic wrestling medal is a silver for Blessing Oborududu, the 32-year-old 10-time African champion.

4. I wish I understood wrestling

The treadmills at the gym have little tv's on them. This morning they were showing men's wrestling. So of course I left the channel on (attractive men in singlets = yes, please). No idea what was going on. I kept wondering why the one guy was constantly being re-positioned to be on his stomach. I also realized this is how a lot of gay porn starts.

I had ear buds in, so no idea what was being said. Wrestle wrestle wrestle. Stop. Reposition. Wrestle. Stop. Position. Wrestle. It went on for ages. I wasn't complaining, but without commentary, it's truly baffling to understand how any kind of scoring works.

And this got wildly off track.

5. I used to understand it

Sort of, anyway. My son wrestled in middle school and the first two years of high school, and now I have a grandson who is wrestling in middle school again. It's kind of complicated. The best I can explain is that you have to pin your opponent's shoulders to the mat for a specific amount of time in a legal move to win. The repositioning has to do with "illegal" moves, as I understand it. That's regular wrestling. Then there is Greco-Roman wrestling, which is a whole other thing entirely, and I don't understand it AT ALL.
