I’vie been cruising around the Great American West for some months now and my impression is that things are a lot more dangerous than most are willing to conceive.
I don’t see any “Biden is my President” signs, but I do see lots of “Trump is My President” signs on lawns and on roadsides. I mean lots. And not just the signs the size of the ones real estate agents put out. I see really big banners that I know cost hundreds of dollars. Some of them say “Fuck Biden”, or, “Face It, Biden Lost,” or “Biden Lost, Get Over It”
I don’t see any pro-Biden or pro-democracy rallies in small towns on Sundays, but I have seen multiple pro-Trump rallies, and car parades and even picnics, (really good Brats, btw). I saw a guy with a roadside booth, signs, pop up shelter, table, cooler with cold drinks, recruiting for a Montana Militia. There was a line of interested people. I stopped to check it out.
They saw my California plates and immediately started in on getting rid of Gavin Newsome—from three states away, mind you—talking about how they were going to get rid of all the ‘antiffa assholes’. I mentioned that my dad was ANTIFA, that he fought in WWII against the fascists so that we had the freedom to do what these guys were doing. They did not take kindly to that notion. They told me I’d better watch my mouth with that kind of talk and that I should get my faggot, commie ass out of town before I got my ass kicked. They were serious. I bailed. I was intimidated. They love being bad asses and we’re going to see lots more of this kind of thing. They’re emboldened.
These folks are feeding on each other. They are increasingly organized. They get those signs, the banners, the cold drinks, the gas money, from somewhere. These folks are getting money to do their organizing from somewhere and it’s working.
Another post here describes how ‘Republicans’ in Nevada are using bullying to take over the Republican Party apparatus. It’s working there and it’s happening and working in communities that we never hear about. The point is, what they’re doing is working.
They’re not counting on winning by winning the vote. This is a key point that we need to recognize. They’re getting the idea that they can win by fighting harder than us. Literally, fighting harder than us. Literally, fighting. You know, with fists and guns and like that.
Do you have a Biden sign in your yard? Does your neighbor? Anybody in your neighborhood? I bet the answer is no. Do you know where to get a Biden sign? You can get a free Trump is My President” sign from the guys who parade their vehicles through small town Wyoming every Sunday. I’ve seen it twice and I’ve been her for just over two weeks. We may be organizing to get out the vote, but we’re not organized to hold on to the hearts and minds of people who value democracy and the rule of law. Scary!
