Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI live in Florida. My governor is a prick.
Governor Ron DeSantis has declared no masks in schools and will withhold state funds from any school that requires masks.
You just know this prick is vaccinated, yet he's discouraging anyone else from getting a shot or wearing a mask.
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE???
DeSantis doesn't give a rat's ass who lives, dies, or becomes radically sick. I really wonder if Republicans are descended from the same species as the rest of us.

I live in Illinois, where we have a governor who is most definitely a non-prick. I deeply sympathize with those of you who are less fortunate.
Our last governor was a massive prick, but we got rid of him before covid reared its ugly head. I shudder to think how he would have responded to the pandemic. Bullet dodged!

(25,258 posts)Abbott issued the same executive order...
He says it is "Personal Responsibility"...What a load of BS...
Yet he signed a law banning anyone 18-21 from working in strip joints...But wouldn't it be "personal responsibility" for someone 18-21 to decide if they want to work in a strip joint?
RussBLib
(9,006 posts)just not for 18-21 year-olds. More moralistic confusion from the family values hyppos.
It seems like half of DaSantis' and Abbott's utterances are designed to elicit a "fuck YEAH" reaction from the rubes.
Repukes dont want personal responsibility for the rich, gun owners, the religious, etc. - but plenty of personal responsibility for the poor and middle class, plus let the government decide things like if a woman gets an abortion and what is taught in the classroom.

(25,258 posts)I don't think it's totally unconstitutional....
Because someone 18-21 can find another job elsewhere..
.
Drinking laws are set at 21
Car rental has minimal ages...
It's just that our governor is a hypocrite. He claims Covid can be controlled by "personal responsibility", yet signs a law that because he doesn't believe 18-21 year olds can be personally responsible for their own safety if they work in a strip joint.

Then Broward back's down in two seconds. It gives a bad vibe, and allows the ant-maskers to say "see, they backed down because its not needed, otherwise they wouldn't".

If DeathSantis can do it for imposing non mask mandate the Feds should be able to do the same to them.

(15,035 posts)Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties represent about half the voters in the state and all three are overwhelmingly Democratic. Withholding federal funds would hurt everyone and DeSantis couldn't give a shit. He's one of those "I've got mine and fuck everyone else" guys.

He should also not offer any assistance (like sending strike teams etc.) to any of those states. Waste of federal resources.

(24,282 posts)of Trump not sending federal help for firefighting in California? You know, because we didn't "rake the floors" of our forests? Bad precedent to set.
I do understand how you feel, though, regarding Florida. It is frustrating. Hopefully we can defeat their criminal governor at the ballot box next year. I think there are enough good people in any state to set things right if we put enough effort into it and have fair elections.

(1,285 posts)Biden administration considers withholding funds and other measures to spur vaccinations
Also in the article:
The federal government cant directly mandate a vaccine, said Gostin, the Georgetown law professor. It can use its spending power to say to a state, You mandate vaccinations. And if you dont, well withhold certain federal dollars.
The federal government exercised the power of so-called conditional spending by requiring states to increase their drinking age to 21 years old to receive full highway funds, he said.

Mr.Bill
(24,282 posts)Medicare funding already has a lot of conditions built into it. Hospitals can be penalized for not meeting certain standards, for instance. Perhaps something can be done in that area. But like the article in your link said, Biden should use those powers sparingly. He must be careful not to harm individuals in doing so.

(1,988 posts)and simply ask him "what is the endgame here?
There is no logical explanation for his actions. Covid-19 isn't just going to go away and kids will get it and spread it on... and on.... and on... At some point, schools will stand up and say "no". This is going to result in a bigger problem and mitigation issue than otherwise.
Its almost like three governors have the plan to make things so bad in their State, that the feds have to step in .... all with the purpose of then yelling "OMG, The feds are taking over!!!". Is this the endgame? Force the feds hand and then play victim?

(70,683 posts)Spoiler: Don't wait for ABBOTT to repent of anything he does, not this same policy one as Asa's.
Another one of those ETERNAL questions. First, here a partial list of the Eternal Questions:
1) How can a decent human ever be a Repuke?
2) How can any minority or member of other discriminated group ever be a Repuke (the Clarence THOMAS, Alberto GONZALES, the Log Cabins)?
But the specific one for today is: How come things that are SO OBVIOUS to some of us nobodies who have no special access or resources are BELIEVED by crazed wingnuts? Like, how come they believed the Iraq attack; how come they believe in ABBOTT and CRUZ; how come they believe in Wingnuttiness?
So here comes one Asa HUTCHINSON. Remember him from days of yore, has always been a pain in the ass and with a goody-goody façade. So he has implemented the same wingnut crap as other wingnut squatters-in-office like ABBOTT. But now with the PREDICTABLE (to me/Dems) results of COVID rampant spread, AWwww, dear Asa now sees the error of his wingnut ways. Oh, but he says couldnt have been any other way since a veto would be over-ridden and at that time the Covid rate was improving. AWwww.

https://www.mediaite.com/news/arkansas-republican-governor-admits-mistake-on-mask-mandates-as-cases-soar-i-wish-that-had-not-become-law/
With Covid-19 cases surging in his state, Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R-AR) wishes he could take back the ban on local mask mandates that he signed into law.
The governor indicated his about-face at a briefing on Tuesday. A reporter questioned Hutchinson on the legislation he signed in late April forbidding local officials from implementing mandates. ....
Hutchinson cited the states then-improving Covid outlook, as well as a likely override from the state legislature, as his reasons for signing the mask mandate ban. Now, however, he has reversed course.
Everything has changed now, Hutchinson said. And yes in hindsight, I wish that had not become law. But it is the law. And the only chance we have is either to amend it or for the court to say that it has an unconstitutional foundation. ....
