New COVID rules for Australians who live overseas and visit home causing fear and uncertainty

Australians who live overseas will no longer be granted an automatic exemption from the ongoing international travel ban, meaning they will have to submit a "compelling reason" to return to their home.

It has taken many by surprise — with Australians abroad reconsidering whether they can come back, and some in Australia questioning if they will be allowed to return to the country they live in.

Hope this all ends up in Geneva one day.

As an Aussie living abroad I have never considered myself stranded as such but it looks that way more and more with every new announcement.

Australia left thousands of citizens stranded abroad in the pandemic. But it let the French rugby team in.

And to be honest I think we'd be getting the same treatment from Labor too.

Although I'm not actively seeking to come back right now I don't even think I could if I wanted too. I've looked into it and jeez, for a family of four and a dog the cost would bankrupt some people.
It's nuts really.

It’s worked for them but it’s come at a price. I recently read a pretty good article in WaPo or NYT about the growing unease there. And these are people with a high vaccine uptake (though their rollout has been slow) and who have dealt with serious restrictions without a ton of trouble from nut jobs like we’ve had here. I feel for them. It’s a very complicated situation.

Had hoped to go to Australia and NZ this year but I doubt Americans will be able to travel to either country for possibly years to come.
