The first cases of the Lambda variant of COVID, which is showing resistance to vaccines in Tokyo, Japan, have been detected in Louisiana, while the country still continues to respond to rising cases and hospitalizations caused by the Delta Variant.
WBRZ reported on Thursday that the Lambda variant, which is believed to have originated in Peru and was first reported in the U.S. in Houston, Texas, has now been recorded in northern Louisiana, which shares a border with the Lone Star State.
Dr. Aldo Russo, the medical director at Ochsner Medical Center in Jefferson, Louisiana, told the local outlet that the Lambda variant had been recorded in the state, saying that "there have been a few cases detected in North Louisiana with the Lambda variant."
Russo confirmed that the variant has not yet been detected in Louisiana's capital, Baton Rouge, but said that health care professionals across the state are testing for it.

(17,802 posts)That vax hasn't been very effective against any of the strains. I'm waiting for a study that looks at the mrna vacines like pfizer and moderna.
This is the first reference I've seen to tokyo, but it is spreading quickly so it will be everywhere before long.

(7,359 posts)Let's not panic yet. As of a couple of weeks ago, 10% of cases in Florida were of the lambda variant. If there was a reason to panic, I'm sure we'd have heard and seen more before today.

(9,212 posts)When my father was infected at a hospital here in January I dont believe they even bothered to test for which variant it was. Nor for me either early on. I wonder if they are tested for delta/ lambda here now if positive at this hospital which is a teaching hospital. Probably not. He is tested each time he is admitted. He is currently back again and they were once again not sd and had numerous people in the er waiting area with masks below noses including a security guard at the reception and someone bringing people out in wheelchairs. I took pics this time.

(17,802 posts)The state contracted Partners in Health early on to establish a contact tracing program. They are very thorough, but the data is all collected by state and local agencies, then fed into a database (secure, but ctc has access).
So as long as the strain was sequenced by the testing lab, it will be in the database and can be tracked from contact to contact.
But in a state like FL, not so much......

(6,870 posts)There are 'Typhoid Mary's' running around infecting the population - be they in gyms, grocers, subways, etc. - and 20 months in we should know MUCH more at the public health level.

(17,802 posts)They know who, where, and when. It's mapped out. But as to covid karens, I'm not sure how you could find one. They wouldn't participate or cooperate.
And covid is not a persistent disease where a carrier can have it for years. It comes and goes; either people get better or worse. They don't stay infectious over several months. Typhoid is different. So is TB.
But "you" or "I" don't need to know that level of information down to the PII level unless we are vetted and read in to access it.
