I was so naive when the Trumpers stormed the Capitol, so sadly naive....
I remember watching the mob storm the Capitol and thinking "They have finally gone too far; surely, this must be political suicide for Trump and the rethugs."
I totally underestimated the nativist, white-supremacist, anti-democratic nature of half the US electorate. My bad. ![]()

2. And now, Covid.
This much is obvious by now:
deSatan - and the other Deep South GOP governors - are trying to let this get as bad as possible, to be used next year in the mid-terms. Democrats need to start talking about it in those terms (just as Repugs would - over much, much less), or the ploy might actually work. |

13. LA has a Democratic governor, low vax rates, and the highest case rate
in the whole country. It's not just the governors, VT and MA both have GOP governors. It's the culture and especially the religious culture. It's pervasive and toxic and values pissing off the Yankees, the college boys, and the US government above their own lives and wraps it up in a nasty little package of false and ignorant piety.
And televangelism has exported it. This is where we are and I don't think losing friends and family or even children to Covid will make a difference. Jebus saves but it's god's will they got whacked by a preventable disease, soldiers against the government and the elites, all. It seems all bad governors are Republican, but not all Republicans are bad governors. We have a glaring exception or two to good governance on our side, also. I think it's best to point the fiinger at what's really at work, a culture based on televised lies and misplaced faith in them. |

21. I'm referring to these Deep South governors and Noem/Rickets types - certainly not all GOP governors
But it's obvious by now that it's deliberate.
Somewhere, in some computer, there's a memo going around among Repugs to "wait until the 1,000,000 dead milestone is reached" - to then hammer Biden with that number non-stop. And of course the only real way to get there by the '22 midterms, is to deliberately propagate it (or try to, anyway). There's not much we should put past these people anymore. Anything to win. A.ny.thing. |

28. That's because Republicans have turned into a party of followers
and the people they are most slavishly following are their most ignorant voters.
It's one reason the party no longer has policies, only outrage over a culture war that they started. So in that sense, you bet it's deliberate. They're people pleasing, not governing. They're terrified to make policy decisions the loudmouths will hate, like protecting everyone in public. |

29. Exactly - that's why it's so easy for far-right GOP figures to pull these schemes
Their zombies react on lockstep - not just on command anymore, but by merely implying that's what you want.
It's an Orwellian dream - or nightmare, given what's at stake here. |

might come to the conclusion that killing people for political gain is wrong (if that's part of their master
plan) and go public with what they know. If that happens, reQublicOns will have a hard time electing anyone for years to come. There's been quite a few big name reQublicans that have quit their party because they didn't like the direction the party was going in, think Lincoln Project. So if we find one more turncoat that values life over misinformation, then, "Happy Days Are Here Again" Maybe we should ask Lincoln Project to look into it. ![]() |

8. I felt the same, especially after a few Republicans spoke out against the attack.
Most of them quickly changed their tune and decided that insurrection is a great way to overturn legal elections. The Big Lie became the talking point and the insurrectionists became regular tourists as Republicans began rewriting history to fit their lies.
State Republicans got busy writing laws to allow them to overturn elections in their states without the need for a violent mob. I think it is impossible to overestimate the depravity of the Republican Party and the despicable tactics they will use to win elections, even at the cost of our country. As a Texas resident, I know that Democrats will not be able to hold off the voter nullification laws indefinitely. I will most likely not be affected because I’m the demographic Republicans favor, although I live in a Democratic city and voters in such cities will be the target for nullification. Republicans are more likely to target Harris County (Houston) and El Paso with more minority voters. One proposed part of the new law is to allow poll observers to challenge voters, no doubt hoping to intimidate them and to cause them to leave without voting. Current law allows poll observers to interact only with the elections workers. There are many more nasty things in the proposed law, such as the change from requiring a signature on a mail ballot to be matched to a signature that is six years old or less. The new law would allow the poll workers to choose which signature they use for matching, so they could choose a signature from 30 years ago that is no longer a perfect match since our signatures change as we age. Ballots have been tossed in the past for minor issues like this. And with census data set to release soon (I think this month), Republicans will quickly gerrymander the state to gain more seats in the House. That’s why I just do not understand Democrats in the Senate. They know what will happen and they know the House will be lost unless they pass a law that does away with gerrymandering. Yet they delay and delay. It will soon be too late because once new districts are drawn, the courts are likely to allow their use in 2022, no matter how skewed they are, since Texas gained a seat for the House and the old districts would not account for that seat. Perhaps it’s because I live in a red state with a bunch of wackos in charge, but I feel democracy and our future slipping away day by day. |

27. Not naive. 81 million of us have held hope that the depravities of humans are still treatable.
It looks pretty bad, but maybe they still are.
However, this is definitely still a House Divided. The brokenness can be depressing. The cracks in the foundation of the longest standing house of democracy led to cracks in the infrastructure. For generations we've tried to mend the structural racism of the House Divided. Meanwhile others profited from increasing the problems divisions, chaos, horizontal violence. It could have always been about the difference in the pace of truth that mends and lies that divide. Besides, as the vilest Writer has his Readers, so the greatest Liar has his Believers; and it often happens, that if a Lie be believ’d only for an Hour, it has done its Work, and there is no farther occasion for it. Falsehood flies, and the Truth comes limping after it; so that when Men come to be undeceiv’d, it is too late; the Jest is over, and the Tale has had its Effect…
But with nullification of the popular vote, it's possible that no matter how right our current system, covid and climate or one doubting senator will worsen and break it. Then the long lurking, parasitic, insurgent libertarian billionaires, with their shell companies, armed chaos agents and political tools will purge those who've resisted them through Rule of Law. It's still possible to win. Beat this down. Their side deeply believes they're right, too, and that we're the evil ones. So we're seeing if the next two years will reveal more about the resilience of truth over lies in the house of democracy. (just throwing in the graphic cuz I liked it) I feel your thoughtful post, so thanks. ![]() |

of aggressive fascism, and potential for insurrection, among the hopelessly ignorant and tragically stupid in rural America.
For years. We were often characterized as fear mongering tin foil hatters. I'm warning everyone right here and now, it is worse now than it has ever been. The hopelessly ignorant and tragically stupid are seething with blind rabid rage all across rural America, and they are a powder keg with a lit fuse getting ready to explode. They are armed and dangerous, and all rational people everywhere in the US must stand united against them in order to drive the fascist from power everywhere that we possibly can. Keeping the fascists under control, and eradicating Covid, are our number one priorities right now. If the fascists take control, democracy, and everything else, is lost. As Manchin and Sinema fiddle, democracy dies. |

54. Racism is primal. Growing up in the racists South
racism was and is acceptable to the majority of whites. The Democratic Party of the South rejected racism by supporting the Voting Rights and Civil Rights Acts spawning the creation of the "modern" Republican Party of the South. The Grand Ole Party having experienced the massive defeat of the conservative philosophy of Barry Goldwater, adopted these racists and wrapped them in the conservative blanket to give the party respectability. The Grand Ole Party thought they could control these demonic new voters. After 50 years it is now obvious that these evil people have taken over the republican party. The Grand Ole Party is dead. Because of the Democratic Party hopefully America can survive.
