(60,429 posts)When is the last time that happened?
I have never talked to Warnock (different story with Jon Ossoff), but I like what I have seen so far, and have already sent him the max I could for his re-election fight for next year. If we can get a Democrat in as governor and put a stop to voter suppression efforts by the current crook, Kemp,
maybe voters in some of the surrounding states will notice that things go better with Democrats, to paraphrase an old ad slogan by the oldest big company in Georgia.
I want Stacey for governor!

(60,429 posts)With Georgia Republicans in full voter-suppression overdrive mode, Warnock will probably need a 12% edge (in votes he would get in a fair election) just to be competitive in votes that will actually be counted in his favor.

(13,650 posts)I love Sen. Warnock -- that's why his photo is my avatar. And as a Georgia Democratic voter, I'll be working hard and contributing $$ in the coming months to help him get re-elected. But it's going to take a monumental effort to keep him in office.
This isn't like the Doug Jones re-election campaign in Alabama -- far from it. But it's not going to be easy, either.
This poll of a few hundred Georgia voters (not exclusively registered voters or likely voters) shows Warnock barely beating Herschel Walker, a very popular retired football star with a +13 approval rating who nevertheless has a couple of significant negatives: Walker is currently a Texas resident, and he suffers from multiple personality disorder.
The same poll shows Warnock only 3 percentage points ahead of the disastrous Kelly Loeffler, who was Trump's second choice to replace Johnny Isakson when he retired for health reasons. (TFG preferred rabid attack dog Doug Collins, but Kemp appointed multi-millionaire and big-time Republican donor Loeffler... funny how that works.)
Loeffler, who's generally regarded by everybody but die-hard Republicans as a self-dealing, robotic country club socialite, could still win back her old seat if she chooses to run. Why? Because there are a lot of die-hard Republican voters in Georgia. And both Collins and David Perdue (who lost his re-election bid to Jon Ossoff) could both still enter the race and would be formidable contenders.
What really helped Warnock get elected in January -- aside from being a great person, a highly respected faith leader who's hard to attack, and a broadly appealing figure who really inspires the Democratic base -- are a confluence of factors:
- He was running at the same time as Jon Ossoff, who is hugely popular among young voters who aren't necessarily tuned in as a rule.
- Georgia Democrats (and activists and donors all over the country) put out a huge effort to reject everything Trump in this runoff election.
- And a bunch of the Republican nutbag voters, who unfortunately are statistically significant -- as evidenced by the election of idiots like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Andrew Clyde -- stayed home for the January 2021 runoff election, believing that "the whole thing was rigged" since their God Emperor Slobfather was "cheated" out of re-election. How engaged they are in 2022 remains to be seen, but I'm guessing it galls most of them no end to have to call a Black man their U.S. Senator.
Don't get me wrong -- I'm happy about this new poll, and I'm happy that Georgia has attained a new status as a battleground state. I do not agree with the pessimists who say it's impossible to overcome the voter suppression and subterfuges of the state's Republican machine, or that this race is unwinnable Because Midterms, because January 2021 was an anomaly, et al. Nor do I agree with those who think Georgia has "turned blue" and is now a safe state for Dems.
I hope DUers will contribute to Warnock's campaign and help any way they can. We're going to need it, big-time.

(18,859 posts)Who's a more formidable opponent in '22?
Walker or "Insider Trading Barbie"?

(13,650 posts)Walker seems like a ridiculous choice to me, but Georgia Bulldog fans are in love with him and might overlook the mental illness. And of course the Warnock camp could never mention that!
Loeffler probably would have a slight edge overall, Id say. Despite her obvious criminality (well, obvious to a Democrat, anyway) and off-putting demeanor, she may appeal to more Republicans, especially women.
Thats just my take as a resident of Blue metro Atlanta. The voters in Valdosta and Rome may see things differently.
WarGamer
(18,859 posts)I see a few more things.
Loeffler said some anti-Trump stuff post election. She ran a crap campaign in 2020. I think the Billionaires wife shtick has very little appeal.
Walker has the mental health stuff plus the ex-wife stuff. But I've seen him speak online and he's charming and positive albeit sounds less sophisticated than most. (Do I get a prize for not using my real words?)
Walker with full Trump backing will rally the white middle age Football and Beer crowd but I can't see it doing much in the 'Burbs.
Would Walker pick up SOME more support from the black community? IDK... can he win over suburban soccer moms? IDK.
If the GOP was smart... they'd go with a safe choice like Rep. Austin Scott... a boring vanilla good haircut prototype GOP'er with a family and a Laborador Retriever.
They go with Loeffler, Walker or Perdue and they lose.

(13,538 posts)6 figures of "red" area voters who voted in Nov didnt return to the polls in Jan. Had the same numbers turned out, the outcome likely would've been different in at least the Ossoff race.

(13,538 posts)Tell everyone its rigged & the Dems are going to cheat, people stay home in large enough numbers to lose, therby allowing Trump to say "See? I told you it was rigged!". I saw idiots, I mean people, post on Fb "Well, they stole another one"
But as the news of those not voting became known, none of those people wanted to hear that!
