(4,044 posts)When sh*t gets real, that's when they start trusting doctors.
Some of them deny COVID is real.
Some of them know it's real and are scared of it, but can't admit it because of tribalism.
Some of them get vaxxed in secret.
Some of them hate the libs so much that they will risk the lives of their families, and not allow them to be vaxxed.

(3,279 posts)My guess is it's a decent percentage. It's only when they're shitting their gowns from coughing so hard or as the doctor intubates them that the light goes on.

(4,044 posts)There are videos of dying people insisting to the doctor it must be something else.
Frankly, when I was growing up, I never thought of global pandemic as the cause of the end of the world.
But, those wildfires, that feels familiar.
If it has to end, my money was on global warming, but I was kinda, secretly hoping for alien invasion.

Vogons put microchips in those towels you know.

(71,862 posts)The Baylor-Scott and White hospital had all their Covid beds filled. The parking lot was full, and I was feeling much better, but the wife says, "we're going in."
I explained my problem with the admittance person and was told to sit down, and they sent my wife out.
There weren't more than a handful of people in the waiting room. After and hour and a half of nobody being called back, I went to the desk and got told it was an 8-9 hr wait just to be triaged. I called the wife and I went home.
Today I feel right as rain, but I am pissed off with Gov Abbott, Sens Cornyn and Cruz, Rep Williams and whatever Gopper replaced my state Rep, Troy about four elections ago. I'm pissed off that I might have gotten sick being too close to someone that had lied to me about whether he'd been vaxxed or not. I'm pissed off about everyone who doesn't believe in science until they show up at an ER unvaxxed. Making me to have to show up in an ER with them.
I'm fed up. A year and a half of being careful, pffft in a couple of days.

(4,339 posts)with COVID symptoms, the first question they should be asked is "are you vaccinated?". If the answer is no, they should be sent home with then number of a nearby mortuary to call when they die.

(3,813 posts)IT IS THE DAMN NEEDLE!
Many of these folks rationalize why they refuse the jab. They are terrified of rolling up their sleeve and feeling the pinch.
If the vaccine were given as a pill, half of the resisters would get it in a heartbeat.

(44,719 posts)They shouldnt show so many pictures of needles going into arms on TV news etc. It makes me cringe, and Im not afraid of them. Ive gotten many shots that dont hurt at all.

whether or not someone has tattoos.
If youve got tats or piercings, dont whine about needles.
When kids at the pediatric office would freak out about immunizations of finger sticks, I would try to use a little gentle humor and say, Well, I guess your folks dont have to worry about you getting tattoos. Many would say, No way!

The worst cases are when children are being given poison from dumbass parents. A few too many have died from this already.

Now its glitzy TV shows with dramatic music and bell-ringing sounds and fancy blonde women with lots of glamour-girl make-up, and well-coiffed men in expensive suits and an announcer repeating the FAIR and BALANCED!!! messaging.

(11,767 posts)There are different mechanisms at play. We tend to think that we will buck the odds. That the science is flexible (and it can be). We tend to hope (to the point of magical thinking). Then when we get sick or injured, we seek help.
It isn't that doctors are lying. Anti-vaxxers think that the government or some nebulous authority is lying. That BIG PHARMA is lying. Remember that people in the liberal camp have also had our problems with pharmaceutical companies pushing products.
Memes are fun for a laugh, but they tend to boil complex situations down to simplistic, often incomplete terms.

Death camps and the rest, rather go to emergency to get treated for anything that comes up than sign up for health care, and be covered.

Nor do I want to. Not ever.
