An authoritarian state would have to establish itself by teaching people new fear and new understanding of the relationship between government and governed. What better way to do that than by resuming the trumpists' interrupted kidnapping of (mostly) undocumented people out of their homes, workplaces, children's schools into detention camps?

That'd be a reward for the loyalty of his "red in tooth and claw" supporters, but at least initially it'd also be supported or at least accepted by over half of Americans.

There are something like 9-11 million undocumented people here; but long before the first several hundred thousand were suffering in places only tRump's "journalists" were allowed to report on, Americans would have been taught to fear the kinds of things that were happening to people who objected and crossed the authorities.
