New York Governor Andrew Cuomo resigned on Tuesday, one week after the release of state Attorney General Letitia Jamess independent report detailing credible allegations of sexual harassment by 11 different accusers. His resignation will be effective in 14 days, at which point Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul will become the states first ever female governor. Below is an overview of Hochul, 62, her long career in politics, the job shes done as lieutenant governor, and how she has responded to the allegations against Cuomo.
Hochul has reportedly prepared for a potential takeover
While one Cuomo ally told New Yorks David Freedlander that it is just not in his nature to ever resign, the lieutenant-governor is reportedly gaming out the possibility of succession, just in case. According to the Wall Street Journal, Hochul spoke with advisers last week on potential first steps if Cuomo was to step down.
Its not strictly a hypothetical either. If the State Assembly moves forward with articles of impeachment and votes to remove the governor, Cuomo will be temporarily removed from office as the trial takes place in the Senate.
A teenage politico
Born Kathleen Courtney to Irish Catholic working-class parents in Buffalo, she is the second-oldest of six children. Shes been involved in politics since she was a teenager. In high school, she volunteered at the local Democratic Party headquarters (where, she has said, she was always the youngest and only female person in the room). While pursuing a degree in political science at Syracuse University, Hochul interned at the State Assembly where she met her future husband, Bill Hochul, who went on to serve as the top federal prosecutor in Buffalo.

(15,325 posts)She should be NY's next elected Gov.
Her lifetime creds cannot be matched as a Democrat. Nor can they be argued against.
Was she elected to the Lt Gov office or did Gov Cuomo choose her?

Even Hamilton said, "Corruption's such an old song that we can sing along in harmony, and nowhere is it stronger than in Albany."
