And another one Bites The Dust....Cliff Meteer of Knoxville,TN

https://www.wbir.com/article/news/local/feds-knoxville-man-illegally-entered-us-capitol-during-jan-6-riot-carrying-stop-the-steal-sign/51-dd6de1e7-b014-4348-a1e1-89dc6e3c31e8
A Knoxville man who carried a "Stop the Steal" sign and later declared "I was there" during the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection was arrested Tuesday by federal authorities at a North Knox County home.

Records identify the man as Clifford James Meteer, 66. The FBI and other personnel went to a home on Foust Hollow Road to take him into custody.

Photo of Trump supporters outside Capitol Jan. 6. Meteer can be seen on the right, FBI says.
Like hundreds of other men and women there to support President Donald Trump that afternoon, Meteer will face prosecution in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.

He's charged in a federal complaint with knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building and parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building, among other charges.

But at least they're being arrested and brought to a jail where they're processed. That experience can be jarring for people, they're going to be strip searched, they're going to have their persons controlled in every way at least for a night or 2.

As many poor and disadvantaged people know, an encounter with the law can be expensive. Unfortunately, I don't know if it will teach them enough of a lesson. In their mind, it's never their own fault.

I know it's been frustrating to see some of these slaps on the wrist, but the bulk of these people have had their lives upended. Getting involved with the courts is a nightmare for anyone. At a minimum, they're paying court costs, paying for lawyers, missing work, and having travel costs. Their lives are in disarray and they have a long road to getting back control of it.

And probation can be no fun at all too, they will have to report, they'll be subject to all types of freedom curtailments. It's no fun.

after the one or two days they might be detained, they are in "the system."

I have long said going through the system alone is a kind of punishment. It shouldn't be, but it is.

That's one of many reasons trump does frivolous lawsuits. Having to get a lawyer, pay for her/him, pay court fees, the feeling of somebody breathing down your back (in his case the federal government), having to acknowledge that you're the subject of scrutiny...that's just a little of it.

After the conviction, no matter what it is, it's on the record.

Not fun. Nothing to be proud of, especially in this case.

It was stupid enough to get involved in the insurrection, but then going around and bragging about it as if they were immune to the consequences, borders on lunacy. Hopefully, the overall experience will be unpleasant enough that they'll think twice before doing anything like that again.

Maybe the next time he supports a "law and order" candidate, he will realize that "law and order" applies to him as well.

are finally coming off when it comes to law enforcement. Not entirely of course, but at least some of these people are starting to be seen as the actual terrorists that they are.

Go to the empty wheel blog to get up to date legal analysis of the prosecutions,

Someone who walked into the Capitol holding a sign and did nothing else is not going to be charged with terrorism.

It’s a pity, because emptywheel really is one of the best sources for both detailed reporting as well contextual analysis of the January 6 prosecutions. Relying on just your own “eyes and ears”, rather than seeking more information, limits your responses to primarily emotional ones, kind of like the insurrectionists themselves.

There are still those of us who believe that justice, rather than revenge, is the best way to preserve democracy and prevent the intrusion of fascism.

Were they not participating in a coup? They are insurrectionists. In their minds they were there to "stop the steal". That means they were trying to keep Trump in power.

How much did the insurrection cost? Extra Police, continued National Guardsmen, Deaths, Hospital Bills, Physical Damages, etc., etc. Say $50 million? That's a very low estimate, but I'll use it. How many people are being charged? 611, last count. If my math is correct, that's $82,833.06 per person.

Oh, and don't forget the others that WILL be charged-tfg, guliani, bannon, mtg, etc. Add them to the list- that ought to bring down each share by a couple of thousand!!!
