Hello everyone,
Since we're in the middle of our Summer Fund Drive, I thought this might be a good time to tell you about what Elad and I have been working on recently. (Actually, I've been tinkering with this since before I took ownership of DU from Skinner, but we couldn't really start working on it properly until this year, after the election.)
As most of you know, the current version of Democratic Underground -- DU3 -- was launched back in 2011. It was a huge undertaking for us and took a number of years to complete. We rebuilt the entire site from scratch, including the backend database. It was like building a new house from the foundations up.
The new iteration that we're working on -- DU4 -- is not quite like that. Rather than building everything from the ground up again, it's going to be more of a (long overdue IMO) visual overhaul.
Democratic Underground has been around for long time now, and people are well used to the way it works. Like you, I use DU every day, and so it was very important to me that when working on the DU4 design, I should do my utmost to make it "feel" like good old DU, while freshening up the look. So, DU4 is a bespoke design with entirely unique code written by Elad and myself -- we're not just grabbing off-the-shelf Wordpress-type stuff and calling it a day.
Think of DU4 not as a new house you're walking into for the first time; rather, as an old, familiar place that's just been painted and decorated for the first time in a while.
That's not to say that we aren't going to make a few new improvements. We've already gotten at least one long-requested feature up and running on DU4 (see if you can spot it in the pics below), and hope to have more.
WHAT'S NEW?
It's important to know that we're not changing a single thing about DU's underlying database (with the exception of any changes we have to make for new features). Pretty much everything on DU4 will work the way you expect it to, from posting, to journals, to your inbox, to whatever. And there are going to be no changes to the rules, or the Jury system. It's the same old DU.
Probably the biggest changes you'll see on DU4 are going to be a recategorization of the forums, and an overhaul of the site's navigation.
RECATEGORIZATION OF FORUMS
We have a LOT of forums on DU -- in my opinion, too many. We have a number of smaller forums that are barely used. DU is well overdue for a spring cleaning in this area, so that's what we're working towards.
What we're proposing is a slimming down of categories (we currently have dozens of topics that forums are scattered between) and in some areas, a consolidation of forums. That would occur where a number of little-used sub-forums could easily fit into a single broader, busier forum. We're a long way off this part of the project yet, so I won't share my current thinking on which forums to consolidate, but it's something we'll definitely be discussing with you down the road, before we make any changes.
I'll tell you our current thinking on categories though. The idea is to keep our busiest main forums separate (General Discussion, Latest Breaking News, and The DU Lounge), and then fit everything else into six categories:
Issue Forums
Forums which are about issues and politics. For example: Economy, Foreign Affairs, Labor
Culture Forums
Forums which are about typically non-political cultural topics. For example: Comic Books, Music Appreciation, Photography
Alliance Forums
Forums for groups of people who share a common heritage/culture/background etc. For example: Asian, Jewish, LGBT
Region Forums
All our state and country forums.
Support Forums
Forums for people who want to offer each other mutual assistance and support. For example: Bereavement, Mental Health, Seniors
Help Forums
A handful of forums for getting help and information about DU or general computer/Internet issues. For example: Announcements, Community Help, Computer Help and Support
SITE NAVIGATION
I really wanted to make things simple and easy for DU members to get around, and maybe find things that you wouldn't normally stumble upon, so the plan on DU4 is to break navigation down into two paths. At the top of every page there will be a button which says "Navigate" -- that'll get you directly to Latest, Greatest, the main forums, and the forum categories. There will also be a button which says "My Stuff" -- that will get you to, well, your stuff. Your posts, inbox, bookmarks, settings, etc. etc. etc.
Anyway, this might all make more sense if you take a look at it. What I have here are some photos of DU4 running on an iPhone. This is not a mockup -- it's actually a live version of DU4, running live content. (I've blurred out our staging server address.)
Welcome to the DU4 Latest page!
Most of this should be instantly familiar to you, with the exception being the navigation bar with the two buttons I just explained above.

New Navigation
Hit the Navigation button or the My Stuff button to get you where you want to go. (Hitting the logo will take you to the home page, still under construction.)

Here's our old friend General Discussion.

Greatest Page
Here's the Greatest page. Mobile default will now be to sort by highest number of recommendations, but you can easily switch to sort by most recent. What's new here is that you can also sort by most replies and last replied to.

Threads
Let's take a look at a couple of threads. The first photo shows the top of an OP, the second shows how a tweet is rendered on DU4, third shows an excerpt, the fourth shows a reply tree, the fifth shows some replies, and the sixth shows the bottom of the page.

Some extra cool stuff
One cool thing about rewriting the front-end code and updating to more modern HTML and CSS means we can do some neat tricks like giving you the option to view the site in "Night Mode":

Or, if you don't like the new version at all, we can make available a reverse-engineered version that looks a lot like the old familiar DU3:

Again, those pictures are live versions of DU4 running live content.
So there you have it -- for now at least. We still have a LOT of work to do, and since this is just a two-person operation it's going to be quite some time before DU4 is ready to launch. We plan to do some beta testing and get feedback from all of you along the way, so we'll have more updates in the future. But if you have any questions about DU4 right now, please feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer.
Oh and don't forget, this week is the Summer Fund Drive so if you feel like kicking in a few bucks to help us along with this project, now is a great time!
Thanks for reading!

Looks exciting... Will there be a beta like for DU3? I enjoyed testing DU3... Putting a review on DU2... Making people Hosts so they could see what it entailed... Being the first (Only?) to ban an Admin from a group
You know, stuff like that
EarlG
(23,633 posts)As mentioned, we still have a long way to go with this. But once we get to a point where we have a mostly-working version that has most of the important pieces up and running, we'll likely want to run it by groups of DUers before we launch the whole thing. We definitely want to collect feedback and make sure it's working the way people expect it to.

(21,898 posts)It almost looks like headers will be customizable as the layout looks different is some of the screenshots, will that be a thing?
oh... And another, heh... With limiting categories for groups (or will everything be a forum?), will it use tags like Discussionist did? I liked the idea but the crowd over there did not use them very well.
EarlG
(23,633 posts)Most of the images in the OP above show the standard DU4 header. The last image shows a modified version, which looks more like DU3, because it's running a different stylesheet on the same underlying code. Rewriting the front-end code in this way does give us a great deal of flexibility when it comes to changing the appearance of the page.
As for tags, we have no plans to bring them in at the moment. As mentioned in the OP, the idea is to make as few changes as possible when it comes to how DU actually works. So anyone who is used to using DU3 should feel immediately at home on DU4.
That's not to say that we might not investigate tags (or something like it) way further down the road, but it's not part of the current project.

(151,269 posts)However, I can't read websites in desktop mode on it. The display shows the screens, but the type is too small to read.
That's the opposite of programming only for cell phones and forgetting about larger displays.
Even an iPad is plenty big to view DU in desktop mode, and many people prefer that, frankly.
I use my cell phone all the time, but I also use my desktop, tablets, and other devices. It's frustrating when a designer designs just for one device form factor. it makes the design look crappy on all other devices.
I don't watch movies on my phone. I watch them on devices with larger displays. The difference is remarkable.
EarlG
(23,633 posts)There is a full-on desktop version too, as well as improved versions for tablet and laptop-size monitors. I posted the phone ones first because it's a bit harder to get the idea looking at small screenshots taken from a large monitor, but here are a few I just made:

32-inchers make it large but there's some head turning involved. It's nice on a 27-inch to keep side margins so there is no do a lot of head or eye movement. For this site, a 27-inch seems to be the ideal size.
In night mode, if those margins were darkened, it would cut out a lot of white real estate coming back at you. That would be a reduction of around 25% of bright display area.

will we be able to post photos directly from the computer or will we still have to go through a middle-man site (photobucket or postimage) to post a photo?

EarlG
(23,633 posts)It probably would not be that difficult to create a system whereby DU members can upload their own photos to our servers, but there's another reason we have never done this, and that is copyright.
If we used our servers to host uploaded images, we would open ourselves up to a whole new world of copyright issues, because we'd become responsible for hosting the images in a way that we're not when they are posted by members and hotlinked from other sites.
Since we don't have the money to hire a team of copyright lawyers, I'm afraid it's unlikely that we will ever allow members to upload images directly to DU (with the exception of avatars).
As for the 404 issue, I'm not sure what that is. Could you PM me with details?

We're doing a lot of work to make sure the mobile version of DU4 is greatly improved over the DU3 version, but we don't have any plans for a separate app. Mainly because there's nothing we can really think of that it could do that we can't already do with a mobile version of the site, but also because neither of us has any experience building phone apps, so that would be a whole other ball of wax.

Acronyms And Abbreviations
I still to this very moment do not know the most correct meaning of
'nt' or 'Nt' or even 'NT', as used vicariously within this forum
Perhaps there might be a spot within your upcoming release of DU4 wherein these (and other) much-used letters and symbols reside, along with more than a hint of their meanings
EarlG
(23,633 posts)If nobody else starts an abbreviations thread in the Community Help forum before DU4 launches, then I will. (Maybe there is already one there and I just haven't seen it.)
To quickly answer your question though, NT simply means "no text" -- it's a way of indicating in the subject line of your post that you didn't include anything in the body. It's kind of an old school thing that dates back to the early days of discussion forums and message boards.

You need to mess with the jury system.
A system which allows the majority to vote on what is insulting to minorities, especially without any ability to explain what it is we are concerned about, will always create a hostile environment for the minoririties (and always creates an inappropriate burden on us to educate the masses who have no interest in being educated).
There are tons of mysogynistic, homophobic, transhostile, body-shaming posts here which survive a jury vote by a majority of people who belong to none of those groups. That makes it at least a semi-hostile place around here when we repeatedly ask people to stop using female names for DeSantis or Lindsey Graham, or to stop making "I'm so disgusted by all that blubber" comments to insult Trump.
Some of these could be easily addressed by adding the option for an explanation to the jury when Bigotry/insensitivity is selected as the reason for the alert. It is less critical in other areas- but some of the slams are so ingrained that I'm sure lots of well-intentioned DU members who are not impacted (or educated as to the impact) don't even see them. I'm embarassed to say that I was using a phrase with origins in slavery until about a decade ago, when I uttered it and the person I was speaking with just froze. That freeze was enough to tell me I had said something entirely inappropriate - and I was able to figur it out. But I'm relatively sensitive to racial issues - and was in my 50s before I consciously put two and two together.
Others - are willful slams - and those of us impacted by them need an actual ability to appeal the jury decision to let somethng stay (the last alert I made on using a female name to insult a male put me in alert-time out, since way too many people on DU think it's just hunky dory to use whatever slam is available when it is directed at people we hate, regardless of the collateral damage to marginalized individuals). When DU3 was designed, my recollection ist that there was not only supposed to be an ablity to appeal to the admins for the person whose post was hidden, but also when something like he above happened - a clearly bigoted, insensitive, etc. post was allowed to stand by the jury. That never materialized.

(23,633 posts)You were the first person to spot this new feature
We're keeping it pretty simple to start -- there isn't going to be a "Greatest Page For Replies" (at least not yet). But if you look at the reply tree in the "Threads" section, you'll see that there is a way to highlight replies in the tree -- you can either highlight the 5 most recent posts, or any replies in the thread which have received more than 5 recs. And each reply will keep a count of how many recs it has. Props to Elad for getting this new functionality up and running in short order.
We're unlikely to go back to the days of Unrec though
And yeah as for DU2, the fact is that all of that data does still exist, it's just in a really messed up format right now. Ideally, we would be able to restore a lot of it. But again, that will be a major project for a later date.
PS. OPs can still be recommended of course, reccing replies is just a new bonus.

What is the "Power" button?
EarlG
(23,633 posts)It's called "Super powers" and it appears at the bottom of all posts, but only for MIRT members, Hosts, and Admins. Basically if you have a particular role on DU, it gives you access to functions that are part of your role.
However, because of the way the buttons are laid out on DU4, it made sense to include it for everyone. Most of the time, for regular members, there won't be a "power" you can use on a post -- certainly not on other people's posts. But for example, if you post an OP and decide later that you want to add it to your Journal (or remove it from your Journal), clicking the Powers button will show you the option to do that. Or if you want to self-delete one of your own posts, Powers is where the link to do that will be.

(A long time ago someone posted a very violent video that stayed up in that column but I didn't even want to open it.)
EarlG
(23,633 posts)In some of the screenshots you can see a reference to "Latest Videos". This is going to be an entirely new page. It's still in the works, but the idea is to archive the old "Video & Multimedia" forum and replace it with what is essentially a Latest page for videos.
How it works: Anytime someone posts a video in an OP in any forum on the site, the thread will be featured on the Latest Videos page. Default view will be chronological order (newest first) but the page can then be filtered/sorted by number of recs, last replied to, political vs. non-political, etc. -- just like you can currently do with regular threads on the Latest page.
This means that the Latest Page will no longer have the three video links, but there will be an entire new page which essentially expands those three videos to 50 or 60. So you can simply avoid that page if you want to.
FWIW, instead of the old Latest Videos section on the Latest page, DU4 has a new section called "Forum Spotlight." This will feature three recent threads from a randomly-selected smaller forum, and the selected forum will rotate every few hours. You can see it in the first screenshot in this post:

(23,633 posts)That is not an RSS feed, it's something else which I'm not going to elaborate on too much just yet (since we haven't started working on it yet and it might end up not being feasible) but in a nutshell the idea is to create a one-stop-shop page which shows you a feed of stuff that might be useful to you. Not posts per se, but other things, like new Announcements, new PMs, new replies to you, new recs on one of your posts, new posts in a forum you're subscribed to, etc. etc. etc. But yeah that's a work in progress... we'll see if it makes the final cut.

Jesus... that makes DU1 even older-- in my early thirties when I made my first post here. You're making me feel ancient and decrepit.

(15,107 posts)Currently, if I bookmark a thread, I can only find it again on my iPad or computer. On my phone, I just get dates, by year and month. If I click on one, I just get the same thing over again. I never actually see my bookmarks. It'd be great if you could make that work.
EarlG
(23,633 posts)I think it will work broadly the same way it does now, but the operative words there are "it will work," which it sometimes does not at the moment
FWIW, Bookmarks works on my phone, I haven't seen the issue you describe. But... people have occasionally reported issues with the Bookmarks page for a little while now, hopefully DU4 will remedy that.

(23,633 posts)that something like you're suggesting will be remarkably easy to add on afterwards. It should be a piece of cake to have something in Settings that allows you to select "Darker navigation buttons" or even different colors. So I wouldn't worry too much about that at the moment. If the color combination of the buttons doesn't work for you, we should be able to come up with alternatives.

Only supporters of the candidates could post there but in the end, Biden was our candidate. Still, as Hillary group from 2016 is still functioning, it will be nice, for some of us, to have a similar group for our 2020 one.

(23,633 posts)The poster had pasted the text manually into an excerpt, so that shows what the new excerpts look like. It would be cool if we could automate that process, but Im not sure its possible.

(1,372 posts)In the new message text box displayed after clicking 'Reply to this post' item, and just above the 'Message text:'
Might you please add a block(box) for 'Strikethrough' styled text? Because sometimes, a 'Strikethrough' styled word (or phrase) followed by a different word (or phrase) yields a "special-meaning" that would otherwise NOT be so 'special' if an explanation were (to be) added. Thank you (rude BUT FUNNY struck-through word here)EarlG for your work in the past and for your considerationals related to this tiny but specific detail.

(11,854 posts)I'm looking forward in seeing and using the new and updated DU4.
I mainly use my PC for conversing and providing photos and links. Sometimes at night while sitting in bed I'll read an article from DU on my phone. My question is, will an App be a requirement to be able to read DU? Apps are memory hogs so I don't like to install them is why I ask.
You talked about having too many forums here, which I agree with. But there are groups here that specifically state that they are not considered forums. So, my 2nd question is will these groups still be available to us? I recently discovered the Weight Loss/Maintenance Group and I don't want to loss this imperative and helpful group.
Thank you for all that you do!

(169,761 posts)I knew you guys were working on an overhaul and I like the fruit it is bearing!
What I miss are some of the post formatting tags. I do get why most of them were removed but there are times when I long for some of the different font styles/sizes/colors we used to have and especially wish we could do tables in a post with columns and headers.
Also, I'm a DU "Main Page" (front page) user and am hoping that doesn't change to much although I expect you guys might tweak it.
Otherwise, excellent work so far!!!

Actually, looks pretty good. From the look of it, I might actually use the mobile mode of DU4 on my phone. As it is right now, I prefer to use the desktop web site on my phone instead. Even if it's a little inconvenient panning around the desktop pages on a small screen, I feel too many features are missing from the DU3 mobile mode.

(721 posts)I read DU a lot, but I don't comment much. One reason I don't comment is because someone has already made the point I would like to. So I'm torn -- commenting would add strength to certain points and arguments being made, and show appreciation. On the other hand, repeating the same points over and over would be superfluous and just make the thread longer.
People try to get around this by using the available emojis -- the hand clap, or by typing +1, +1000, etc.
A "like" button could be very useful, because it would allow participation for those who don't want to repeat what's already been said, or don't have the time to write a post, and a chance to show support and appreciation to those who do take the time to spend on DU.
You wouldn't have to include a "dislike or thumbs down" option - I believe that could lead to nasty outcomes, especially for any trolls on the site.
Good luck with the revamp of DU. It sounds great.
