It was a great night for baseball.
DYERSVILLE, Ia. — Let’s get this out of the way right now.
Thursday night’s Field of Dreams game was a showcase, an extravaganza, a happening. You can't even dream this stuff up, how magical this night was. The center of the sports universe, at least for one day, was smack dab in the middle of an Iowa cornfield way up here in northeast Iowa.
Put plainly, baseball's grand showing at the "Field of Dreams" movie site was our state’s greatest sports event ever.
Yes, I said it.
Ever.

The only live game I ever watched was at Yankee stadium.

(2,234 posts)The intro, the players coming out of the cornfield. All of it. I wasn’t even a baseball fan yet when that movie came out, and it was and still is pure magic.
If only Burt Lancaster were still around to see it..

(2,234 posts)But James Earl Jones was a very close second. I think the magic of that movie was in the casting. Each actor was perfect and believable. If even one had been different, it would not have been as good.

Superb opening with the players coming out of the cornfield. The game was incredible, ending with a walk-off HR.
and still does every time I see it.

(2,234 posts)I spent many evenings playing catch with my dad, sometimes with a baseball, sometimes with a football. Not having brothers has precious perks.

I don't contribute to right-wing death merchants, even in the name of "entertainment".

That is a huge scene in the movie for me.

It was a wonderful diversion from the fact our country is on fire on so many ways.

(7,615 posts)poignant but fun game to watch. With all of the statistics, analytics and hype of modern major league baseball, it was so refreshing to experience the simple purity of the game in that environment. Loved that scoreboard too.

(82,849 posts)Did you know that many Major League mascot names are actually shortened versions of longer names? It's true! "Mets" is short for "Metropolitans." The Cincinnati Reds were originally the "Redlegs." And Yankees is short for Yankeessuck.

(10,878 posts)Beautifully done. I don’t watch baseball that much, but this was so well done. Hated not a mask in the stands, but I was safe in my house. That’s on them. But the game, the imagery, guests broadcasters were all perfect. Great Job MLB. Most definitely gonna go watch the movie again.

(24,677 posts)Unbelievable comeback in the top of the 9th, but a huge uh-oh went up for me when we did not get that second out on the ground ball to third that was clearly foul. That led to the walk, which led to the winning run coming to the plate which led to…shit. I’m convinced that had the Yankees got that second out that they would have won.
Still, a great game. We did pretty well for a team missing half its top players.
