(9,719 posts)And there was a terrible period of reprisals, murder, and persecution, but the Vietnamese sorted out their own affairs. They seem to be doing just fine now. I can only hope for the same for the Afghans, though I don't expect to live to see it.

(2,278 posts)I partially sponsor some young girls in a wonderful progressive orphanage in Kabul.
Those who run the school will likely be killed. The older of the girls will likely be forced to become Taliban brides. The younger ones who knows what. And these are kids who have known a decent degree of freedom, exposure to the arts and culture. I just can't imagine the horror they are in for. Or worse, I guess I can.

(33,244 posts)Background: U.S.-Taliban Agreement
After more than a year of negotiations, U.S. and Taliban representatives signed a bilateral
agreement on February 29, 2020, agreeing to two interconnected guarantees: the withdrawal of
all U.S. and international forces by May 2021, and unspecified Taliban action to prevent other
groups (including Al Qaeda) from using Afghan soil to threaten the United States and its allies.
There might be more information; I didn't read the whole doc.

(2,636 posts)The leaders of the Democratic party are likely to be women and people of color. Take a look at any gathering of GOP tools. All white, and 98% men.
The GOP would love to limit what women can do, except breed, because white people are only 58% of America's population. Likely less, since TFG's administration didn't put any effort into accurate census counts.
Until women are truly seen as equals across the globe, we'll be fighting this patriarchal man's world bullshit. You know, all the same battles my grandmother born in 1901 had to fight so I could be, well, able to post on a political forum without being stoned, and not in the good way.

they forcibly make young girls sex slaves
they kill any woman they want for any bs reason
they stone woman to death
they whip woman who dont follow their Neanderthal rules
they destroy schools so girls cant go
they limit the girls schooling to 12 years old
They demand to know the girls location from families
the boys are made into sex toys
the boys are forced to go to madrassas
Minority religions are persecuted or killed
Oh, I guess thats the old taliban also.
All the gains and freedoms destroyed in just a few weeks.
When does the world act to stop this madness ?

1. other countries are just as bad---- >we cant be everywhere but we are here
2. Do we have to be there for another 20 years?---> No until we figure out what went wrong and fix it
3. They have to fix it themselves---> they cant
4. we shouldn't spill our blood and treasure----> Then what does the US stand for? If not this ,then what?
5. Its Bush's fault---> yes but we have to deal in the present
6.The Afghan army should have fought better----> I agree but they didn't, now what?
7. If they cant do it in 20 years ,they never will----> we don't know that
8. We dont owe those people anything---> If you feel that way, ok. I think we do.
9. Why dont you go?---> we have an Army already that can do the job..and they were doing the job
1o Thats where empires go to die---> Yes but we did more for these people than any empire ever did)
I know i'm a pariah with my views on this.
I'm sorry.

(5,443 posts)Apparently Biden has long advocated leaving Afghanistan, but timing is important and the consequences which are predictable are tragic.

(2,736 posts)Leaving was a good idea at a wrong moment.
Biden signaled we were out and giving the taliban a green light...
And hanging the people out to dry.
Ive posted a young girl videoo taken as a sex slave and a 2nd video about a young woman killed in col blood.
As weird as this sounds, train the women.
BTW... its nice not to be the only one who feels the same
