HOMELAND SECURITY AGAIN IDENTIFIES TRUMP AS A THREAT
Actively undermining the American government is an illegal act of terrorism. Why have no charges yet been filed? Peddling conspiracies may provoke a second attack upon our Nation.

(28,979 posts)A woman who bragged on social media about her sons exploits at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 ended up unintentionally getting him arrested, according to reports.
Two separate relatives (through marriage, they note) told the FBI about posts made by the mother of 39-year-old Tyler Slaeker. The feds arrested him in Federal Way, Washington, Huffposts Ryan J. Reilly wrote in a Twitter post from this Wednesday.
The mother of Tyler Slaeker, 39, posted photos to her Facebook page that he sent her from the Capitol, relaying his descriptions of what he was experiencing. She also claimed that the event was largely peaceful, saying that the pictures her son sent her show normal, middle class, even older crowds inside the building.
But relatives of Slaekers mother took screenshots of her posts and sent them to feds, leading to Slaekers arrest shortly after, according to the criminal complaint shared by Reilly.
Investigators were able to confirm Slaekers presence at the Capitol on Jan. 6 by tracking his whereabouts using cell phone records and security footage showing him taking the exact selfies posted by his mother.

(28,979 posts)Washington (CNN)During a plea hearing on Monday, the chief judge in DC's federal court questioned the Justice Department's approach to have US Capitol rioters pay the government small portions of the $1.5 million in damage done to the Capitol building by the mob, while the total cost of the riot to American taxpayers amounts to 300 times more.
"Where we have Congress appropriating all this money due directly to the events on January 6, I have found the damage amount of less than $1.5 million, when all of us American taxpayers are about to foot the bill for close to half a billion dollars, a little bit surprising," said Chief Judge Beryl Howell.
"I'm accustomed to the government being fairly aggressive" in seeking restitution, Howell added.
The defendant who pleaded guilty during Monday's hearing, Glenn Wes Lee Croy, agreed to pay $500 in restitution, which has become typical for defendants pleading to misdemeanors. The few rioters who have pleaded guilty to felony charges have each agreed to pay $2,000 in restitution.

(28,979 posts)Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) in an interview with CNN that aired Monday evening said she had fears of being raped during the Jan. 6 insurrection in which she recounted people banging on her office doors while she hid.
"I didn't think that I was just going to be killed," Ocasio-Cortez told CNN anchor Dana Bash. "I thought other things were going to happen to me as well."
The New York Democrat said that "white supremacy and patriarchy are very linked in a lot of ways," and remarked on what she sees as the sexualization of violence.
When asked by Bash to clarify if she was worried that she would be raped during the storming of the Capitol, Ocasio-Cortez responded, "Yeah, yeah, I thought I was."

(28,979 posts)(CNN)A "disgrace to our country." "The tyranny we rejected." "An embarrassment to every American."
In presiding over the cases of hundreds of people accused of breaching the US Capitol on January 6 in support of then-President Donald Trump, federal judges have not held back when describing the unprecedented nature of the events of that day.
"You called yourself and everyone else patriots, but that's not patriotism," Judge Amy Berman Jackson told defendant Karl Dresch earlier this month. "Patriotism is loyalty to country, loyalty to the Constitution -- not loyalty to a head of state. That is the tyranny we rejected on July Fourth."
As the congressional investigations grow more partisan -- and Democratic and Republican viewpoints on the significance of the Capitol attack grow farther apart -- it's notable that judges appointed by presidents of both parties have described the riot as an existential danger to American democracy.
"It means that it will be harder today than it was seven months ago for the United States and our diplomats to convince other nations to pursue democracy," Judge Randolph Moss said at a July 19 sentencing hearing. "It means that it will be harder for all of us to convince our children and our grandchildren that democracy stands as the immutable foundation of this nation. It means that we are now all fearful about the next attack in a way that we never were."

(28,979 posts)DHS is concerned about Trump reinstatement conspiracy theory, top official says
DHS's top counterterrorism official told members of Congress about the department's concerns in a private briefing.
The conspiracy theory that Donald Trump will be reinstated as president in August has sparked concerns at the Department of Homeland Security, a top official there told members of Congress on Wednesday.
The exchange came in a members-only briefing that John Cohen, the departments top counterterrorism official, gave to the House Committee on Homeland Security. Three people familiar with the briefing described it to POLITICO. They requested anonymity to discuss the private conversation.
In the briefing, Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) asked Cohen how DHS is following the spread of disinformation and conspiracy theories, as well as the way that discourse can fuel violence. She specifically brought up the conspiracy theory claiming Trump will be reinstated as president in August a theory Trump himself has reportedly promoted.
Cohen replied that DHS is not aware of any specific, credible threats of violence linked to the conspiracy theory about Trump being reinstated. But he added that DHS is following discussion of the topic online among extremist communities. And he said department officials are highly concerned about it because it fuels the false narrative that the election was rigged a narrative that may trigger a violent response from extremists.
The briefings topic was domestic terrorism. But Cohen also fielded a significant number of questions from members about violent crime, which has surged in 2020 and 2021. Cohen said DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has directed officials there to look at factors fueling the violence that fall in the departments mission. And earlier this week, the Biden administration rolled out a strategy to combat violent crime.

(28,979 posts)The sharp increase in web visitors alarmed the sites operator so much that he contacted the FBI. Elliot Carter, who operates the site, worried people were covertly seeking escape routes or entry points to the Capitol ahead of the electoral college count in January.
That concern about web traffic to WashingtonTunnels.com eventually made its way to leadership of U.S. Capitol Police, the News4 I-Team has learned. These people were suddenly obsessed with the Capitol building, Carter said.
Carter, a longtime D.C. professional who once interned on Capitol Hill, created and curates the website detailing the history of underground tunnels and pipe systems in the nations capitol. The site, which has a narrow but devoted following among D.C.-area history and city planning buffs, includes maps and details of the underground transit rail system, along with water and sewer systems.
Carter has also included maps of the unique and heavily traveled underground tunnels on the Hill, which connect the Capitol building to House and Senate Office Buildings, the Library of Congress and the Capitol Visitor Center.
Traffic on the website is usually limited to visitors and referrals from people in D.C. and in nearby communities in Virginia and Maryland, Carter said. But starting on New Years Day, a spike in traffic included visitors nationwide. He said a deeper review of analytics from his site revealed many of the clicks were coming from hyperlinks shared on anonymous message boards, sites and forums named after militias or firearms, or using Donald Trumps name.

(28,979 posts)Washington (CNN)Boyd Camper was set to join the ranks of those pleading guilty in the January 6 insurrection when the federal judge overseeing the case abruptly postponed the plea hearing over questions about whether Camper really believed he did anything wrong.
"Then this plea doesn't go forward," Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly told Camper's lawyer, who objected to a line in the plea deal that said Camper "unlawfully" entered the US Capitol. "If he's in there and doesn't think he did anything wrong, then there is no plea."
It's one example of the spectrum of contrition from the Capitol rioters. Some have offered emotional apologies and renounced the "big lie" about the 2020 election. Others remain defiant and see themselves as "political prisoners." Some rioters, even while pleading guilty, pushed back when pressed by judges to take responsibility, leading to hiccups and delays at several recent hearings.
The pushback from rioters comes at a key moment in the national reckoning over January 6 as Congress ramps up its inquiries and as former President Donald Trump and his allies continue to whitewash the deadly attack, often promoting the same self-serving narratives as the rioters.
A lack of remorse could also have legal consequences. Defendants who plead guilty aren't required to apologize, though it can persuade a judge to show leniency at sentencing. Federal prosecutors have said they're looking for contrition from the insurrectionists, and they've already cited defiant comments from some rioters to argue in court that they deserve time behind bars.

(28,979 posts)The Republican running against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in the 2022 midterm elections has been exposed by Snopes as a participant in the January 6th riots at the United States Capitol.
Snopes tracked down social media posts that showed Forte at the Capitol building on January 6th, and she even went so far as to tell other Trump supporters to "get your asses to the Capitol" at the conclusion of the "Stop the Steal" rally.
"She took selfies with a number of attendees who considered her a 'superstar,'" writes Snopes. "In a live video, she urged people at then-U.S. President Donald Trump's rally on the Ellipse to make their way to the Capitol. We even found that she entered a restricted area after the crowd knocked down barriers that law enforcement installed."
In one clip, Forte even praises her fellow Trump supporters for "storming the Capitol" as the riots were occurring.
