Seriously, why wouldn't they wait to attack until after the US troops fully left? By taking cities now, they risk the US saying "never mind, we can't go just yet." I don't get them at all.

Trump negotiated this with the Taliban without including Afghan govt or military at the negotiations. As long as they don't attack US personnel they're safe. Afghan army melting was, I believe, prearranged between Taliban and provincial gov'ts. Another instance of Trump abandoning our allies in the field, like the Kurds in Syria.
Edit: The 'firefight' turns out to be a prison riot in Kabul that had to be repressed. It was mistaken for a Taliban attack.

This is not Trump's fault, it's Bush's fault.

Just wait till the Taliban fragments. There'll be four or five Afghans before it's all over.

I know, irony. Right?
But it also serves to put down other factions. If the Taliban can route the Great Shaytan or whatever their current pet name is for the US/West, what hope do the Turkmen or Tadzhik forces have against them? Alla. Who? Akbar.
