Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979 and left in 1988, I believe. It seems to me that I remember Bin Laden got his start there and was supported by the U.S. (somewhat secretly, I think). Also, I remember but don't know if it is true, was it Putin who said it will be Bush's Vietnam? Am I remembering correctly or not?
