(92,843 posts)"They have never governed any space. They are not a government. At least they certainly they weren't then and we don't know what they are now. They have imposed their form of fundamentalism and radical Islamic Sharia on a population, not all of whom believe in that. We do not know how they are going to react to now being in charge. Last time they didn't give a hoot about what the rest of the world thought. They did exactly what they wanted, backed by enough power from Pakistan and certain other quarters of the world ... certainly, women are right to be incredibly scared. Let us not forget that the designation of the Taliban as a terrorist organization still stands, and it's a very big ask to think this is going to be some kind of inclusive government with rights for all."

(40,729 posts)They're socially backward with little education or cultural awareness, and they have a strict, conservative religion. But unlike the Amish, they're mean fuckers with guns.

(57,621 posts)They won the war. They control the country now. It doesn't matter what we may think of them.

(58,785 posts)and total indifference to and cluelessness about what that picture shows -- after 20 years of thinking we should help make them like us -- is irrelevant. At best.
This is not a picture of them, but of people in an Afghan village. Not men coming in from hard work or battle, is all.

(34,189 posts)Still no leader in either picture - just "wanna be"s and sycophants.

(6,473 posts)men and the picture on the back wall. I'm sort of surprised they left it up for the photo. Just one of life's too weird to not be true. Sometimes I think we really do live in an insane asylum.

(4,333 posts)Thinking of all of the sci-fi shows that have the characters go to alternate universes (like the Star Trek one where Spock had a beard). The alt universes are always bad and evil and are societies that exist for the powerful at the expense of all others. It makes me think we live in one of those alternate universes that the shows visit.

(6,473 posts)prevail and people take care of each other and their communities and don't think evil of others. Hopefully...
