why would anyone believe that even the non Taliban Afghani men would want the situation to change.

Organized RELIGION of every stripe is mostly just cover for power grabs.

(96,882 posts)Urban Afghanistan (Im and around Kabul) was fairly progressive before the Taliban. Women didnt wear burkas (or even hijabs) they worked, went to college; went outside for n their own, etc.

(52,360 posts)the situation to change. And women have fought tooth and nail for a hundred years at least to make the change to where we are now.
And many American men would absolutely love it if the situation reverted tomorrow. Many more than would admit it. Many more than we would like to think.

(37,748 posts)We (our collective culture) have been rending our garments in true hipster fashion since last week over the current plight of the women in Afghanistan... but at the expense of women's concerns, treatment, and history everywhere else.
The newfound outrage at the Afghani misogyny we've seen since Biden's announcement seems little more than a stage prop used only when doing so supports some other cause. I can remember the collective conversations regarding Steubinville or Elliot Rogers minimizing the same misogyny as anything other than misogyny.
So I can't do anything other than agree with you, and hold a lot og skepticism for so many people who are only now expressing concern about the treatment of women.
