(32,840 posts)Even malaria is uncommon now, at least in the US. Most of us can't fathom how lucky we are to live in the time of modern medicine, and advanced medical research.
Before World War II nobody knew what penicillin was. Many Allied soldiers' lives were saved by penicillin, who otherwise would have died from infected wounds. The rapid distribution of antibiotics (including penicillin and others) since the 1950s has made a difference in all of our lives. The medical breakthroughs that have come along during the baby boomers' lifetimes is astounding. Yay science!
