//"Seven months on and Pirillo has decided to do a follow-up experiment, only this time he took Windows 8 on the streets and asked a random selection of people to try and use it. Again, the end result was one of confusion, questions as to why it was so complex, and of course, everyone was looking for the Start Menu and Taskbar."//

(1,684 posts)Some stuff I like doing on a PC other times, I prefer the Linux (Ubuntu) much more user friendly. But I don't understand what MS was thinking?

(21,786 posts)that's what MS was thinking

(895 posts)Maybe I'm just more of a tech person, but I had the Windows 8 interface figured out in probably a matter of seconds. It's really not that difficult.

(931 posts)But it's very counterintuitive to win users. I consider myself a very experienced pc user, but it took me a while to get the hang of the preview/beta.
MichaelMcGuire
(1,684 posts)As the video shows. Personally I get more and more turned off by having to go through that process.
War Horse
(931 posts)Probably good on a phone or tablet.
I'll pick up a copy for my vista laptop (recently bought a pc w/win7, so it's dirt cheap) and configure it to run with basic win7 features. Sure hope it's more stable than the beta, though...

(21,786 posts)For laptops and desktops? A loser. But tablets and touchscreens are the future of the operating system market, so Microsoft is focusing there. It's the same thing the GNOME Foundation (behind the GNOME desktop for Unix-like operating systems) and Canonical (of Ubuntu Linux) have done with GNOME 3 and Unity, respectively. They represent a major departure from the traditional desktop paradigm in ways that a lot of people find confusing and unnecessary, and have proven to be very polarising among users (with Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, throwing a hissy fit and saying "Fuck GNOME, I'm off to XFCE"...but Linus has form, he chucked his toys out of the pram and switched to GNOME when KDE4 replaced KDE3).

(1,684 posts)I remember the reaction to Unity with Ubuntu. Didn't bother me personally but. I thought W7 was the best or maybe XP as the highlight of MS.
Spider Jerusalem
(21,786 posts)and I think based on what I've seen that Win 8 is NOT a step forward in that regard. (Not for me personally, I'll be sticking with 7...and dual-booting Ubuntu).
MichaelMcGuire
(1,684 posts)Best of both worlds really. Used to dual boot but the Windows XP stopped working and when I updated Ubuntu I just used all the disk.

(931 posts)MS has a history of releasing a couple of crappy OSs between each really good one

(6,359 posts)(Or actually, the Lisa...) I was pretty much at a loss with no command line back in 1984. Eventually I got the hang of it
I'm not sure whether this will be the same kind of story; on some level I'm sure it's usable.

(81 posts)And I've had hands on experience in the beta for this OS... Don't get me wrong, I think the OS will be great for mobile devices, but on a desktop or laptop, Windows 7 will still be superior.
Yes, you can toggle between the touch-friendly interface or a more traditional one. However, much like Windows Vista, it's a large departure from the "comfort zone" that most users are familiar with. Gamers will probably stick with 7 due to knowing that it is very friendly to older games. Windows 8, the verdict is still out on that.
I'll wait til the first service pack comes out and I may try it out then, but as for now I'm happy with my Win7/OSX combo.

(58 posts)Once the Surface type hybrids and the new Nokia 920 (blows away the iphone) are released it will be a a game changer.
Personally I would keep Win 7 on the desktop unless I was going to get either one of those items.
Dash87
(3,220 posts)That's the only thing I can surmise. Otherwise, why would someone want a smart phone interface on their desktop? That makes no sense.
