Depressing shit-show at the Walgreens today ...

The past couple weeks mask use has been way up at my local red-area Walgreens, which was heartening. But today I went in, it was more busy than I've seen it in weeks (saw about 12 people in total) ... and literally NOBODY but me (and employees) were in masks.

There was even some idiot woman rocking her 'Fuck Social Distancing' t-shirt.

We were at adjacent registers, and at one point I heard her say she's having trouble understanding the middle-eastern gentleman ringing her up, and she was like 'between your accent and the mask, I'm having a hard time hearing you'. Not in a mean way, but ...

You don't how hard it was to bite my tongue in that moment.

Actually some of you probably do

I at least wanted to blurt out 'Clever Shirt!' and have her say something like 'Yeah' and then I go 'Totally keeps people the fuck away from you right? It's genius!' and then just walk away and leave her to figure it out on her own.

Good on you for being the better.

I'm so done lately with the stupid.

I'd have told her to pull the shit out of her ears and learn to listen rather than complain.

legitimately polite kinds of things, where she was just explaining why she was asking him to repeat something for the third time ... she wasn't being a bitch to my man Akal (who I see ALL THE TIME and is a super sweet man) or I would've stuck my nose into it and told her what's what.

I was already really annoyed with the shirt thing though, so I almost snapped anyway

But next time I'll try to remember to get in the face of a 60 year old, 5'4", 120lbs woman ... with my 6'6" 280lbs frame ... throwing out hostile pro-liberal words at the drop of a hat here in Mormonville, in front a big line full of unmasked wingnuts at the Walgreens.

You got my back, right?

(other than her stupid shirt) quite crossed the line that would've made it 'okay' for me to give her a hard time ... happened.

If this kind of nonsense keeps happening around me, good chance I'll have an even better story of protesting the idiocy to share here pretty soon.

And given how thin my patience is, it'll possibly be one that involves cops, Maricopa County jail, and me getting my ass beat ... because it won't involve a physically tiny, 60 year old woman.

and they're afraid of everything thanks to right-wing social and public media.

They are also known to exact very mean revenge against anyone that crosses them, if they manage to get any of your personal info.

I'm too damned old to physically fight and dodge bullets any more, so I'll keep my lip zipped.

Nothing we say or do in a retail store will change these nut jobs one bit, so why bother?

at my local Walgreens I've seen lines for for testing and shots the last two times I've gone there.

Big country, big enough for smug doofuses to keep learning the hard way for their whole lives. That's the problem with a big country where the states are as big or bigger than most foreign countries.

the pharmacy area. Masked. FIlling out vax forms. Some appeared to be highschool or college age. THe last time there was a whole family together

BONUS: many were African American which pleased me since they have a special reason to be hesitant, and if they get it often have a harder time with it.

And yeah, I've seen long pharmacy lines on a lot of the days I've been there too, not sure if it's lines for shots but it's certainly possible. The drive-thru has also been crazy busy though as well so not sure ... maybe it's just a ton of sick people?

My hearing is not what it used to be. Add masks it is a struggle. Add mask plus accent of any sort we may as well be using charades.

So I get that part.

In fact now that I think of it, he may well be from an African country rather than Middle Eastern. He looks like he may be from the ME, but he doesn't quite sound like it ... fair to say his accent isn't really one you hear a lot. But I've seen him a few times a week for like 7 years now.

Like I say I was already mad about the stupid shirt, and being surrounded by unmasked (which was NOT normal for this Walgreens lately) and when she seemed to be bringing up the accent and mask ... my immediate reaction was just like 'OMG you SUCK!'

But then I realized she wasn't being harsh, rather was politely asking him to repeat what he said with that explanation, and I'm like 'yeah, it can be a little hard to understand Akal' so I calmed down.

The signs on entrances to stores and businesses now say that masks are only required for the unvaccinated - and they're using "the honor system." So you can imagine how that's going.

Thing is, I have no idea how that's going in terms of actual compliance. Bit of a 'Black Box' situation.

Delta/infection numbers, however, suggest (but don't prove) that this particular scheme ain't going too well.

I’ve often realized years after the fact what I should have said in a situation! Kind of a curse, actually….

Then there’s always the “If ESP could kill” phenomenon, which sounds more like your experience in this case. (Another trait we share!)

I remember I was in a large store the weekend after Amy Coney Barrett was nominated and seeing an older couple attired in “upscale casual” togs — probably just stopping off on their way to the country club. They were yukking it up, walking maskless all over the establishment (where almost everybody was masked), obviously convinced the world was their oyster. I glared at them, but they probably didn’t notice my menacing narrowed eyes through my fogged-up glasses.

I like to imagine them the day of the Four Seasons Total Landscaping “All the Networks!” debacle, crying in their cocktails as we drove around town cheering, waving hats out the car windows, and honking at every intersection where jubilant people were brandishing Biden-Harris signs.
