ATLANTA — Nearly 2,000 Georgia children are being diagnosed with COVID-19 a day, according to new data from the Georgia Department of Health.

The state reported 16,915 new cases of the virus over the weekend and 71 new deaths.

The GDH does not break down new daily cases by age group, but the current seven-day average of cases in children ages 0 -17 is 1,823. Of those, children ages 10 -17 are seeing the highest numbers of new cases, with a seven-day-average of 1,101 per day testing positive for the virus.

My child begins in three weeks in NYC. Vaccines are mandated for all staff. Masks for whole community. Airflow and HEPA filters and all other mitigation efforts have been made. We were in school safely last year, and with a highly vaccinated community, I feel positive about going in this year.

(For example, San Francisco's number went down this week even though schools started. It takes a little time for numbers to report, but I feel like if you're in a highly vaccinated community, you have a good shot.) Plus, school is important for the mental health of all the children I know.

due to Covid outbreak. They are going back this week... still unmasked. It is truly insane.
