afghan deadline? I wanted to do a poll but I'm not a star member yet. I have mixed feelings and was curious how others felt

(2,520 posts)It seems the power of decision is not in our hands and we're at the mercy of the Taliban.

(21,295 posts)It will never get done by the deadline. We have plenty of bargaining power over the Taliban, for one, 1.3 billion of Afghanistan's money, in gold. The Taliban has no access to at least 10 billion dollars of Afghanistan's money.

(19,027 posts)I think the US commanders are playing coy with how many Americans are left. It's probably a smaller amount that they're letting on and then when that number is close to zero the US will make a surprise announcement.
The thing is, there are some Americans who don't want to leave, maybe their families are there and they will stay with them. We have to have strong diplomacy for when/if these Americans change their minds.

(12,230 posts)Since August 14, 2021, over 50,000 have been successfully airlifted. Critics will continue with the bullshit, but alas, this evacuation process will be studied and used as a template for many years to come.

(256 posts)Im certainly not going to say based on what the news correspondents say. I feel like Biden would extend if he felt it was necessary. He has access to the information necessary to decide. I do not.

(19,972 posts)What do the Talibubbas want in exchange for an extension? Is their "red line" just a bargaining chip? I mean, August 31 is an arbitrary date so why not some other arbitrary date a week or two later?
