I was shopping last Friday for groceries and was one of the few people in the store wearing a mask.
As I wheeled my cart down the coffee isle a forty year old looking guy, a guy much younger than me, a guy not wearing a mask, spotted me and headed straight towards me, agitated.
When he got within 15 feet of me or so he started shouting, "What are you afraid of, dude. What's with the f*cking mask..."
Not in the mood to engage this asshole, I replied "I'm wearing it because I don't feel well."
Seriously, the guy stopped dead in his tracks and the color drained from his face. He literally backed away and left the isle without saying another word.
So much for another fearless and maskless Trumper, eh?

But most of the Trumpers are just white nutmeggers, our state nickname, with a nativist streak. Eastern Connecticut used to be very purple even though it's now more lean blue. We had a congressional race here not that long ago that was won by just 21 votes.

(23,908 posts)and some of its suburbs are very blue. But other Buffalo suburbs are red. The farther from Buffalo you go, the redder it gets. Rural villages, small towns, dairy farms are all very red except a couple small cities.
I am in a small city surrounded by rural Magats and a handful of them within the city. I am a 5 foot senior woman. I have had young men in stores follow me to the checkout in order to deliberately crowd around me there. They don't address me directly, but joke among themselves about masks. One cashier orderd a man to back up from me and he argued with her until she said she was calling the manager. Another time, different store, I told them it wasn't necessary to crawl inside my clothes and they backed off when the cashier glared at them.
Just because I am a short, old woman wearing a mask.

Because I live in Southern California, moved here 5 years ago, and I have met more confrontational assholes here, than pretty much any other place I've lived (and I've lived all over the country).
Chicago would be the one place I've lived that was on par. Lots of assholes there in the 1990s. Probably didn't help that I worked with the public, but still . . .

(118,623 posts)been hearing about all the t***** supporters, but had not actually seen one in my slightly bluer area of fundieville. I walked into the store, and a woman was standing by one of the floral displays, wearing the red t**** t-shirt. As I walked past, I said, "It is so handy when idiots self-identify," smiled at her, and kept walking. I encountered her later, and she just glared at me as I shook my head.
Cannot imagine how that scene would play out these days.

(19,023 posts)while I'm one of the few wearing a mask, I just start coughing real loud and act like I'm having trouble catching
my breath. One day a masked lady came rather quickly to see if I was OK, I informed her I was just clearing the
aisle of anti-maskers. We had a good laugh and she said she was going to start doing the same. We sure in the
hell don't need antivaxers & antimaskers close to us when we're playing by the rules and they're not.

(12,807 posts)Their response is denial, instead of taking action, because they want to wish COVID away. And people who wear masks or get vaccinated are a direct threat to this denial. They think we are giving COVID the power that they are struggling desperately to deny to it.

You just proved it.
Dont see many confrontationals where we are here in NW Oregon. Its pretty blue here, and generally well-masked. But Im gonna remember your response to apply if some Maggat jerk tries to give this little old lady any shit for wearing a mask (as I ALWAYS do).
Btw - I call em Maggats too. Cuz thats what their shitty, selfish, thoughtless, thoroughly inconsiderate, and belligerent behavior proves they are.
