Black Americans have surpassed White Americans in rate of vaccination by double digits, according to a new NBC News poll.
Black and Latino Americans lagged behind in vaccination rates for months as polls showed hesitancy among various communities, but vaccination rates among Black people have dramatically increased during the Delta surge.
That increase is reflected in the NBC News/Hart Research Associates/Public Opinion Strategies poll released Tuesday. Respondents were asked Have you already gotten the vaccine?
snip
Black Americans were the racial group most likely to say theyve been vaccinated at 76 percent, with Latinos also above the average at 71 percent, and White people at 66 percent.
The lowest self-reported rate of vaccinations was among respondents who voted for former President Donald Trump in 2020. Only 50 percent of thoe Trump voters say they have been vaccinated.
This is excellent news.

(11,683 posts)White folk gets all comfortable having stupid notions and magical whims. They can indulge those fantastical notions because they are often buffered financially, racially, and socially. They can make poor decisions and survive.
Blacks have to think more carefully to survive and have evolved better rational skills on what is safe, sane, and logical.
Also, they are less likely, in my experience, to sit around watching/listening to toxic "news" sources that thrive on white viewership.

Only Republicans would think door too door outreach meant jackbooted fascists forcing injections upon unwilling people at gunpoint. That was always nonsense.

I really do not know what is next for America. There was always a sense that while one particular thing might be going wrong a gas shortage, a war, some domestic policy our foundation was strong we would together figure a way out. Thats not now. I certainly was not alive in the 1850s but I image the growing divide going on then is similar to now in how people felt. Is the next election in 22 or maybe 24 since 22 is just a midterm going to be another John Brown moment? I dont know but I do know there is one part of America that wants another part dead.

(9,054 posts)This is a self-reporting poll (i.e. bad statistics) vs. actual data collected by medical professionals and scientists.
Aside from fuck that Republican in Texas, there is a reason to be concerned about Black Americans flagging in vaccination rates. Not only do we want them to get vaccinated, but it's important to look at the data and start asking why. Is it vaccine hesitancy? Is there a way to alleviate that by working within the community (i.e. churches)? Is it lack of availability? Are these communities not being served at the same rates? I think we know that's always been a thing.
It's important to have accurate data so we know what kinds of policies to push forward.
A self-reporting poll is not that. That's Statistics 101.
This is not useful information.

(9,646 posts)So 77 percent self reporting is not necessarily a legit look
In the heart of Chicago over 70 percent are vaccinated while in southern texas it is like 23 percent

(56 posts)persons sampled overall is just plain too small to provide any trustworthy basis for estimating the population parameter of the vaccination rate for all Black people in the US. It's not really the self-report that is problematic. Note that almost all polls of human beings' verbal responses are self-report and there is little sound basis for estimating that Black respondents would dissemble at a rate that might differ from white folks' level of misrepresentation.
Have you ever encountered a poll that purported to characterize an entire population or subpopulation of the US on the basis of N = 70?
You have not.
Nor have I.
The most primitive statistical notions involving the use of a sample statistic to estimate a population parameter are presented in the first few weeks of a semester long, elementary statistics course. Such courses occur frequently now in high school curricula.

(56 posts)someone below me is fostering -- no doubt unintentionally -- a mistaken meaning of 'representativeness.'
That a sample of 70 people are black is about the most primitive meaning imaginable of representativeness of the population of all Black people in the US. Representativeness in the sense of the extent to which a sample statistic reflects the population parameter from which is drawn requires that the sample was randomly drawn and the size of the sample is much larger.

(32,673 posts)Seriously? I know the media keeps pushing a certain narrative down everyone's throats, but that doesn't mean it's true. Think about it. The vast majority of trumpers are white and/or support the republican party, which is the anti-vax party. Why is it so hard to believe that black Americans, who overwhelmingly support pro-vaccine democrats, are getting vaccinated at a higher rate?
Zeitghost
(3,856 posts)It is a single data point that has been contradicted by information from more robust studies.
Sympthsical
(9,054 posts)We've already gotten data from the states that conflicts with a statistically poor self-reporting poll.
Once people think, "Well, that's that problem solved," complacency sets in. A problem is no longer a problem. People stop worrying.
I am worried about people not being vaccinated. And if they're not, I want to know why and if there's a way we can change it.
https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/issue-brief/latest-data-on-covid-19-vaccinations-race-ethnicity/
Not only do we know Black communities are under-served in health care and access in general, we know that Covid has been affecting them disproportionately.
Black people have received smaller shares of vaccinations compared to their shares of cases and the total population in about half of states reporting data. In the remaining reporting states, the share of vaccinations they have received is similar to their shares of cases and the total population. However, in most reporting states, the share of vaccinations received by Black people is smaller than their share of deaths. For example, in the District of Columbia, Black people have received 43% of vaccinations, while they make up 56% of cases, 71% of deaths, and 46% of the total population.
Some people want Happy Talk and Twitter clicks. I want data. Then I want policy that follows the data and fixes any problems.
This poll is irresponsible. It engenders complacency.
