Couldn't watch the Al Smith dinner speeches live, but from what I read here, Romney was all but giving the President the finger. He doesn't have the President's grace or style, and yes he's a cold blooded reptile at heart, but it wasn't as bad as some suggested. Mitt is used to having one foot in his mouth anyway, so if he stumbled over the line a bit here and there . . .

(53,339 posts)Romney did have a good early joke, when he said he has to wear sportcoats and suits at campaign events, so it's nice to be able to relax for this one and dress like he does at home (in white tie). He might even have done okay if he hadn't thrown in the nasty political jabs....

(28,876 posts)Personally I didn't see it (was watching my team make it to the World Series).
In any case, it's believable that Romney wasn't as horrible as he was made out here. As a word of advice, this place gets *pretty* jumpy close to the elections. Any thread even vaguely supporting the Republican candidate is not going to be well-received, particularly coming from new posters. Just let this thread go and come back again tomorrow.

(37 posts)A shallow suggestion that I've been banned before? This because I didn't agree with a couple of knee jerk reactions to Romney's speech? Interesting. Whether on the left or the right, a ditto head is a ditto head; I just didn't expect to find them at DU.
My bad.

(25,647 posts)supporting Obama's re-election is a completely separable proposition from whether you enjoy your visit to this forum or find its regulars accommodating.
equating people's skepticism that you are any kind of Democrat when your early posts are devoted to defense of Rmoney's character to the kind of shit you'd get on FR or redstate for an equivalent defense of Obama is both fallacious and laughable.
Please proceed.

Romney was NOT self-deprecating like the speakers are supposed to be.
Romney took EIGHT swipes at President Obama (most were mean and snarky). President Obama told only three jokes about Romney.

(2,010 posts)It wasn't about him "stumbling over the line". He was mean spirited and inappropriate with at least half of his "jokes". The other half were really him trying to boast. They were the kinds of ass hole things republicans say to each other about President Obama in the locker room at the country club. This guy must not have any real friends. If he did he would know how to give some good-natured jabs. He's just not a real human being.

(37 posts)By Romney's low-brow measure, it wasn't that bad. I watched both speeches (just the speeches) on Mediaite. Both got in some barbs. Mitt's didn't go over as well, but they didn't sink to the depth I was expecting, particularly given that there may be no blood in his veins. What I did NOT get to see was the shoulder shirk someone said Romney gave Obama. Anyone have a clip?

(37 posts)And only in that order. I watched the speeches. I made some poor assumptions about DU before posting the comment. I've learned my lesson.

(9,992 posts)I see later you replied to your own OP claiming you had gone and watched them online, but you were posting that AFTER I was already in the process of replying to your OP.
What you made poor assumptions about was that your OP wouldn't be recognized for exactly what it was.
Enjoy your stay!

(1,372 posts)...but the number of them directed at the president was out of balance; he didn't do what most do in this setting, which is to include a lot of self-deprecating humor, instead of primarily taking aim at your opponent; and on the style end, he delivered the jokes quite awkwardly. It was pretty bad.
