An Ohio judge ruled in favor of a woman last week who sought to force a hospital to administer Ivermectin an animal dewormer that federal regulators have warned against using in COVID-19 patients to her husband after several weeks in the ICU with the disease, the Ohio Capital Journal reports.

(11,767 posts)You can't make this up. A judge, who knows nothing about medicine, is forcing medical staff, to give a drug contraindicated by all medical science, to a patient.
And in Texas, you can sue anyone at anytime, with no legal penalties, if you think that they are performing or receiving an abortion, a completely medically validated procedure of the patient's choosing. But yes, liberals are the Nazis because we want people to cover their mouths when in public to curtail the spread of a disease that has already killed more then 620,000 people in the US in the course of 18 months.

(34,189 posts)But the hospital refused to dispense it, so the idiot wife sued the hospital to force them to administer it. Apparently, the hospital didn't even send an attorney to the hearing to resist.

Julie Smith found Ivermectin on her own and connected with Dr. Fred Wagshul, an Ohio physician who her lawsuit identifies as one of the foremost experts on using Ivermectin in treating COVID-19. He prescribed the drug, and the hospital refused to administer it.
A hospital spokeswoman said she cant comment on litigation and federal patient privacy laws prevent her from commenting on any specifics of patient care.
Smith is represented by New York attorney Ralph Lorigo, the chairman of New Yorks Erie County Conservative Party, who has successfully filed one similar case against a Chicago area hospital and two more in Buffalo. He did not respond to an email or phone call.

Its unclear why the hospital didnt mount any defense under a new law passed in the state budget this summer that grants health care providers the freedom to decline to perform any service which violates their conscience, as informed by moral, ethical or religious beliefs.

(13,874 posts)Using any treatment for COVID-19 thats not approved or authorized by the FDA, unless part of a clinical trial, can cause serious harm." Any quack who prescribes Ivermectin as a treatment for Covid-19 is violating his/her Hippocratic oath to "do no harm."

(35,590 posts)This is how it works and has always worked. If a physician orders the wrong drug, the wrong dose and a nurse gives it, the nurse is every bit as guilty as the physician. The judge is way out of bounds. Any doctor or nurse refusing to give it are well within their rights and are doing the right thing...protecting their patient REGARDLESS!
Isn't this practicing medicine without a license?

The Judge is enforcing the prescription, I guess.
It's not prescribed for viral infections, let alone covid, so it's not legal.

(4,222 posts)A non-medical person forcing those whose licensure depends on doing no harm, to administer a drug that has no proven efficacy and may be harmful to a patient. And what would be the consequences if medical personnel refuse? Can you imagine a doctor or hospital being held liable for not administering a non-indicated medication? This person cannot be a judge.

He tested positive for COVID-19 July 9, was hospitalized and admitted to the ICU July 15, and was sedated and intubated and placed on a ventilator Aug. 1. He later developed a secondary infection hes still wrestling with as of Aug. 23, court records say."
A real doctor prescribed it, so I guess give it to the dude. He's been in the ICU over a month; can it really harm him at this point? It probably can, but would anyone be able to tell?

(2,655 posts)Its a complete joke. I don't care what anyone says. Nobody at that hospital has to administer that drug and the judge can't force anyone to. It doesn't matter that she found someone online. The husband isn't being treated by the quack online while in the hospital.

Can a doctor found on the web order hydrochloroquin? Injections of bleach? Shoving bright lights into the colon?
Must the hospital accept prescribers from outside it's circle of admitting physicians?
