I'm A Man of Unmatched VirtueI am a virtuous man.
I eat no meat.
I drive no car.
I read no news,
And there you are.
Social media enrages me.
TV shows are Fascist news.
Google is a horror show
and Facebook is the same.
I will not drink their booze.
I tell all I meet
What I do not do.
If they don't agree
I block their view.
And now, you see, I'm telling you.
I walk or bike whene'r I go.
The food I eat I prefer to grow.
My house is dark
To save the fuel.
My virtue is a precious jewel.
Just one thing confuses me.
I ponder it, but cannot see.
My virtue is all but complete
Few I know can compete.
So why do people not love me?

(38,328 posts)My white Wild West ancestors had great respect for Native Americans and considered themselves to be a highly ethical people. At the time that meant they weren't actively hunting Native Americans down and killing them or raping their women. Sometimes they'd even hire them. But they never questioned their privileged status as white people. Most of them probably thought the local Indians would be a lot better off if only they could act more like good Christian white people.
My grandfather could work with anyone professionally -- women, "negros" (his words), homosexuals... Nevertheless he lost his cool when my wife and I announced our engagement. Men in his family simply didn't marry "Mexican girls." (His words again.) To his credit he got over it, just as some anti-gay parents get over it when their own children turn out to be gay.)
I think it's pretty easy to imagine a future where most people find things like factory farm pork or fossil fueled automobile abhorrent. Those trends have to start somewhere.
