AUSTIN (KXAN) A recent poll shows half of Texans disapprove of how Gov. Greg Abbott is performing in his job right now, with a majority believing the state is going in the wrong direction.
The August 2021 poll, conducted by the Texas Politics Project, shows 50% of surveyed voters disapprove of Abbotts actions and 41% approve. Thats the lowest job approval rating during his time in office, the Texas Politics Project reports.
Additionally, the Texas Politics Project says its poll showed 52% of Texans believe the state is going in the wrong direction, which is the highest percentage recorded in that category since the polling project began in 2008.
The polling project also surveyed voters on how the state government is faring with the COVID-19 pandemic. Results found 49% of surveyed voters disapprove of Texas response to the pandemic, 39% approved and the rest were either neutral or didnt know or have an opinion. The poll showed 53% specifically disapprove of how Abbott is handling the pandemic.

(10,599 posts)Same will happen in FL because of the IDIOTS there.
Polls are nice, but all that matters are elections, and the repubs have turned rigging those into a science.

(10,599 posts)Opposing him is Bullshit. It means nothing. Just like saying storming the Capitol and attempting to overthrow the Government is wrong, but let's just give them some community service as punishment for the crime.
Send a fucking message. By sitting around and doing nothing, you're an ENABLER, and you're literally killing people because you're too lazy to spend 30 minutes to cast a ballot.

(60,436 posts)The rank and file are mindless, but their strategists are not. That is why they are going full blast with voter suppression measures. No one is too lazy to spend 30 minutes casting a ballot. They want to make it so that plenty of voters in Democratic areas need hours or a full day to cast a vote, often depending on transportation not available to them. They want mail-in made difficult to impossible, and armed harassment at the voting locales made legal (for Republicans--you get arrested if you're a Democrat).

(128,150 posts)She was known only in the DFW area as a police chief and she had a few missteps in that job. Her campaign organization was poor. She also flubbed on some topics in the debates. It was apparent that other than her one area of specialty which is law enforcement, she lacked knowledge on other issues that are vital aspects of the job as governor.
Throw in the trifecta of being a woman, Hispanic, and a lesbian along with what I previously mentioned and it is understandable why Valdez only received 42% of the vote against Abbott. While I voted for Valdez, I considered her the least likely to get elected out of the major races (gov., lt. gov., AG, comptroller, senator) that year.
The good news is I believe that there are more people with negative feelings about Abbott now than when he ran in 2018. For awhile, I think that Abbott was viewed more as a caretaker governor; however, over the past two years he has become more of authoritarian and that does sit negatively with a lot of people. Abbott will have a significant money advantage (about $70 million), but he does remain vulnerable and he will also be taking criticism from the right in the GOP primary. Democrats need the right candidate for governor and a little bit of luck, but it can happen.

(17,760 posts)Will figure in to the equation as well. There is discussion of him running as an Independent. He will take some of the moderate votes away from Beto unfortunately.
If Beto runs, the Democratic leadership needs to be prepared to spend a ton to back him.

I know, I know. That was a rhetorical question.
The five horses asses need to be thrown out of office, to wit: cornyn, cruz, abbott, patrick, paxton.

(114,692 posts)He, of course, has never made his positions clear, but it seemed like he was going to try to win over R's with at least some pandering positions.
I have to wonder if he is still going to run. He will be hated by everyone on the Left and by Hollywood if he embraces anything close to the policies re: COVID and ANTI-CHOICE and ANTI-IMMIGRATION.
So, my guess is his candidacy will fade away. At least if he is smart and hasn't had some horrific RW cult epiphany.

(128,150 posts)and he would also have to adjust his standard of living if he won the office. If it came down to a contest between Abbott and McCanaughey, then I would vote for the latter. However, I'm pretty fed up with the actor to politician conversions.

(32,354 posts)It doesn't cover the obscene anti-abortion effort. Whatever Abbott says---and regardless of what you see here at DU---in poll after poll, a clear majority of Texans favor reproductive rights.

(30,613 posts)This is likely to be the highest poll number of the rest of his term.
The people he's killing are disproportionately in the 41% who approve of him. So are their widows and cousins. This won't end well form them or him.

(55,840 posts)Biden is getting great marks for his COVID response. The pandemic marches forward. The "riot" is becoming known as an insurrection. People have had 8 months to ponder what happened, let it sink in. People don't like restrictions on freedom, we're Americans after all, and while it might not apply to them, and they might not agree with abortion, they recognize the heavy hand of oppressive government when they see it. And they do wonder, what's next?
