A rural Oklahoma doctor said patients who are taking the horse de-wormer medication, ivermectin, to fight COVID-19 are causing emergency room and ambulance back ups.

“There’s a reason you have to have a doctor to get a prescription for this stuff because it can be dangerous,” said Dr. Jason McElyea

Dr. McElyea said patients are packing his eastern and southeastern Oklahoma hospitals after taking ivermectin doses meant for a full-sized horse because they believed false claims the horse de-wormer could fight COVID-19.

It was a drug interaction.
Brought her sodium level to 105mg/liter.
Anything under 135 is concerning. Under 125 is severe.
The LD50 is 98. So, she was 7ppm from the LD50, meaning she probably had a 30% chance of dying!
Worst part: it was ME that looked up this drug on the internet and discovered the side effect. Her GP & prescribing doctor both were confused.
They were hitting with IV after IV of saline, and level wouldn't rise.
They pulled that med off her list and in two day she was at 138. Man, was I mad!

separate reporting yet. Couldn't help noticing that no #s are given for this supposed crowd of ODers, not even estimates. Which is a shame, because the sooner the crazies dump this one and move on to the lime Jello cure the better. Also didn't find any report involving the alarming vision loss.

I did find a confirmed report of "at least two" hospitalized for ivermectin overdose in Mississippi, and a report of one in Australia. None sounded overly serious, not enough to scare even local crazies probably.

Whether that's because somebody is encouraging people to take huge doses or it's just a matter of stupid people making bad guesses, stories are popping up in lots of different places. One article I looked at said medications for horses are often very highly concentrated. That would certainly make it easy to miscalculate.

Yet another day has passed, and all reports quote that one doctor, Jason McElyea, who claimed floods of ODs from taking doses meant for horses were overwhelming rural hospitals. ERs were "clogged" with ODs.

So which hospitals and how many OD's? That basic information strangely wasn't given and still isn't. He said ODers had vision loss -- try googling that to (not) find followup on this scary news. OK's biggest newspaper has a bunch of articles about or mentioning ivermectin, but nothing on this.

Below is the followup on ivermectin from Oklahoma City's KFOR-TV, which broke the doctor's sensational account. It doesn't even discuss its current headline, and the caption on the picture mentions increase in poison control calls in Nevada.

3 miles out from my suburban location are mostly farms. The county I live in a mostly farms. Mostly Trumpers and "grab yer bootstraps" types. All 3 major Cincinnati hospitals have built facilities further north because the population is moving out. All of them are reporting a steady string of patients that tried these hair brained ideas - not just horse pills.

I still can't wrap my mind around the concept. I've given horses paste, drenches, IM injections, IV injections and boluses. I've watched them get stuff pumped in via stomach tubes. I've never heard of a pill for a horse. I guess a bolus is close.
