One of my daughter's best friend's dad just passed away from injuries he received in a fall from a ladder. It took 3 days to get him the right medical care because of the backlog of Covid cases.
My daughter is pretty broken up about it.

(115,681 posts)It kills people who can't get medical care because the people who do have it are taking up all the hospital beds. And too many of those people got it because they wouldn't wear masks or get vaccinated. So who is the real killer?

(15,083 posts)The county is only 50% vaccinated. Between the MAGAs and the anti-vax hippies, we are in bad shape.
I was scheduled for surgery in early August but it was cancelled because it's considered "elective". My husband is supposed to get a hip replacement in October, but who knows if that will happen.
If you get in a car accident or have a heart attack or stroke, you are SOL.
Really pisses me off.

(268,949 posts)but it is not considered an emergency so she cannot have surgery now - lots of folks without Covid are dying because of Covid

(5,810 posts)Recently diagnosed with a treatable form of lung cancer. One spot in her lower lung. She has been on a drug to shrink the tumor and then was supposed to have surgery to remove the remaining tumor. The tumor has shrunk, as they hoped. The surgery has not taken place because there is no space in the hospitals to get it done.
Imagine knowing you have a cancer that cant be removed because there is no space for you to be admitted. As a cancer survivor myself, this is just appalling and unacceptable. There will be other horror stories like this to come out of the Covid crisis. 😔

(9,998 posts)Tell her to go to a less fucked up state, where they actually have hospital beds and can treat people other than the unvaccinated assholes, who apparently get priority because they were/are assholes.

(19,371 posts)Had a heat attack on Christmas morning. They were at a vacation house about an hour and a half from Dallas and the regional hospital had no real cardiac unit. There were no beds available in Dallas or Ft. Worth due to the spike in Covid cases at the time, so he sat in that regional for three days until a cardiologist could get there. By that time it was too late for the procedure that could have saved him.
So no, he didnt die from Covid, but he died because of Covid. A distinction without a difference as far as Im concerned, and one of the reasons anti-vaxxers and mask deniers can all go to hell.

(19,371 posts)His wife was devastated and shes not the litigious sort, but youve given me an idea!
Considering the specious way the Texas GOP crafted the abortion law and basically gave standing to everybody to sue individuals for having a medical procedure that in no way affects them, theyve opened the door allowing even the remotest level of connection to be considered standing. Now, seeing as how this man was not only my friend, but was also a business partner (drummer in my band), Id say I have way more standing to sue Abbott than some anonymous tipster does!

(14,854 posts)It's not endangering her life, fortunately, but she's been in debilitating pain for months. Simple outpatient surgery will solve the problem completely, the neurosurgeon says, but she can't get it done. This is in Florida, so there's no end in sight.

(13,494 posts)had a couple of stories in our local news recently where someone has died because no room at hospitals because they are overwhelmed with Covid patients and have no room for non Covid patients.
Need to set up MASH units to treat unvaccinated Covid patients. Bring in military reserves to treat them in tents somewhere-maybe military bases. I am DONE with these people who wont get vaccinated.

(81,220 posts)I think if you didnt get vaccinated and got COVID, you should go to some tented MASH-type unit. Leave those precious hospital beds for the deserving.

(45,432 posts)when we can all see that's a blatant lie. People shouldn't have to die preventable deaths simply from waiting for a hospital spot to open up. The system is failing.

(7,153 posts)Tripped and broke her leg.
The ambulance finally arrived and took her to the hospital.
When I caught up, I had to wait outside until they finally put her into an ER "room".
There were only a few gurneys in the hallways then, but an hour-plus later the ER hallways were packed.
The hospital had to call in someone affiliated with the hospital to operate the next day.

(2,811 posts)I guess we should have put microchips or tags in the vaccines. How can we sort out vaxed and or reasonably exempt from the unvaxed but healthy enough to get the shot but refused?
