I was visiting some Mormon friends in Provo. Their young daughter was talking with me, curious about my beard. I said something scary and she started to cry.
Her mom came over an said. "I know you were kidding and didn't mean to scare her, but you see, she took what you said as the literal Truth, because this is the first time in her life that she has heard someone tell a Lie."
That always stayed with me.

I'm not cheating, honey.
Oh, your haircut looks nice.
I'm not embezzling, how dare you accuse me of that!
Don't be silly, your roast is not overdone.

(4,074 posts)I don't think that's a good thing. It causes problems, not that she has bad intentions, she is constantly worried about other people's feelings but she will not lie. I guess my father-in-law does tell white lies occasionally, though he is very quiet. I don't think it's the religion. I am not a fan of that or any other church. My in-laws are genuinely some of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

(12,272 posts)I met Mormons like your MIL when I was in Utah. I was quite surprised, but rather liked it. I also learned to keep my sarcasm to a minimum.

That doesn't mean they aren't the nicest folks in the world. But everyone lies, even white lies, and I believe a very nice person definitely would, because they wouldn't want to cause pain or be rude to someone.

(25,906 posts)Not only do all humans lie to some extent, but LDS are actually encouraged to lie, if the ends justify the means.

(114,904 posts)This is just an absurd claim. Of course "real Mormons" lie. So do "real Christians" and "real Jews" and "real Buddhists", etc.
Followers of all religions lie. At least most of them. Humans lie. The vast majority of us.
And what on earth did you say to the kid.
This is just so ridiculous I can't believe you believe it.

(11,495 posts)That they don't lie, yet I know for a that many of them do lie, and like the Mormons "lying for God" thing, the JW's have the same teaching but they call it "theocratic warfare", which allows them to lie to people if they think it might help them convert people to their teachings.
I don't care what religion a person is, or isn't, there are always honest people as well as dishonest people.
