In the latest bizarre twist to a South Carolina murder mystery, prominent attorney Alex Murdaugh announced Monday that he is quitting his law firm and heading to rehabtwo days after he reported being shot in the head while changing a flat and three months after his wife and son were murdered at the family estate.
The surprise statement from Murdaugh raised more questions than it answered and did not mention the weekend incident that landed him in the hospital.
The murders of my wife and son have caused an incredibly difficult time in my life. I have made a lot of decisions that I truly regret, he said in a statement via his lawyer.
Im resigning from my law firm and entering rehab after a long battle that has been exacerbated by these murders.

(32,086 posts)It was a superficial wound. Makes me wonder if this might have been an attempted suicide, but he changed his mind at the last second.

(32,086 posts)His son was involved in a boating incident that resulted in the death of a young woman, and was charged with killing her. Dad got the charges dropped. It could just has easily have been revenge killings.

(32,086 posts)It's quicker to just change the tire than it is to wait around for AAA.

(19,567 posts)If you followed this family you'd know he's powerful in the region. It's not out of character to assume he called someone and was waiting on them. He's not a regular citizen like you and I are. Not AAA since they take way too long in such a place, but I'm sure he had a person to touch for such situations.
This whole family drama is extremely convoluted. If you follow it back to Stephen Smith's death in 2015 there are at least 6 years of oddities and multiple deaths now. It feels like someone might have been trying to stuff skeletons in the family closet with marginal success?

(32,086 posts)Even a "person to touch for such situations" might not be readily available, especially where this guy was. Wealthy, powerful family drama aside, it's still quicker to just change the tire yourself in that location. It's not like this guy isn't capable of it. That's not to say that I'm buying the whole flat tire story...

(1,364 posts)This is rural South Carolina, not the city or even the suburbs, yes he absolutely would change his own tire.

(16,497 posts)At first I thought a family murder had revealed he was going to rehab. (How? Don't ask me!) And then he shot himself after that happened.
No, it doesn't make sense! I'm just saying it was really hard to figure out the sequence of events from this clumsily constructed headline.
Of course, reading the article set things straight, but WOW, is this a terrible headline!

(32,086 posts)However, his son was involved in a boating incident that resulted in the death of a young woman. He was charged with her death, but the charges were dropped. He and members of the family were being sued for wrongful death as a consequence of the dropped charges. It seems more likely his wife and son were killed in revenge, but who knows at this point?

Sympthsical
(9,099 posts)If he was already a functioning alcoholic, the death of the wife and son could've spiraled him outright. Sometimes it only takes a small push to tilt someone over the edge. His situation certainly qualifies.
I guess it all comes down to the murders. There are several theories that work - i.e. I don't assume he's guilty, but open to the possibility there.
So far, there are actual reasonable explanations for what goes on with him.
Which is which is which? I have no idea. It's a mess all around.

(16,975 posts)Thats a bizarre way to commit suicide, but its also a bizarre way to shoot someone all bullets missing except one that just grazed his head. If you went to all the trouble to hunt someone down, it seems they would have made sure they were successful before leaving the body.

(16,975 posts)They found 7 shell casings so they would have found the gun that matched, it seems.
Maybe the perp(s) thought since they shot so many times he was surely dead, but almost all missed with only one grazing his head. Hmm. Unless Im wrong that casings dont mean shots were fired
.Im not that knowledgeable about gun mechanics.
