Instead of despairing, we must keep our eyes on the horizon

There's been a lot of hand ringing, nay saying and doom predicting some of it understandable, much of it self-defeating .

But I refuse to get bogged down in pessimism. Instead, I'm following this guy's lead:

"America, I never said this journey would be easy, and I won't promise that now. Yes, our path is harder, but it leads to a better place. Yes, our road is longer, but we travel it together.

"We don't turn back. We leave no one behind. We pull each other up. We draw strength from our victories. And we learn from our mistakes. But we keep our eyes fixed on that distant horizon knowing that providence is with us and that we are surely blessed to be citizens of the greatest nation on earth."

President Barack Obama, September 6, 2012

could affect our chances in 2022. If people believe it’s hopeless, it will turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Thank you for posting this. I'm going to try to make these words my mantra.

It might be that all of the horrible things about which we're wringing our hands lately are not the death throes of our nation, but merely the death throes of all that has been worst in our nation.

but I’ve kept mention of it off this site. The only reason I bring it up now is to thank you for the reminder. It helps.

I want to say first that I appreciate your perspective and your positivity.

I rollercoaster, depending on the situation and what is going down. Today, I learned that the Southern Orca pod in Puget Sound is likely a goner. That's a low, though not surprising.

At other times, like you, I at least believe we must keep fighting, keep digging in, and I respect and am in awe of POC who have been fighting this for centuries. As a woman, I share some of the struggle. My skin color provides me some cover. With our turn in the barrel, I can only imagine the frustration, anger, and depression this would naturally lead to. Yet somehow, you prevail.

I do take issue with US being the greatest nation on earth, in any case.

I appreciate you.
