In 1973 I finished high school, passed my test for union training.

Had the whole summer off and spent it in Austin.

It was a great summer.

My parents gave me the money they saved for college and said go to Austin and enjoy the summer.

I did.

1973 abortion became legal.

Things were looking up.

Texas was run by Democrats.

Now it is 2021 and I am glad I am not that same age now.

The future was there, just grab it.

I did.

Now we have this mess to deal with.

I would like to be that kid back in 1973 again.

Austin was a blast back then.

Ralph Yarborough, very progressive and a big supporter of civil rights.
He and Strom Thurmond got into a physical fight in the floor of the Senate over civil rights legislation. Molly Irvins, Ann Richards...they had some giants back them.

Got to meet President Kennedy because of the Senator.

Just a little kid.

The dinner was at either the Rice Hotel or the Shamrock Hotel.

My parents did not tell me in advance.

It was at dinner, steak not chicken.

We set a table next to the President.

I could see him.

Ralph introduced us.

Wow.

I had worked on the Kennedy campaign.

I shook his hand.

I do not remember what the food tasted like.

He was handsome.

Had bbq with under a white tent on the grounds of the Capital.

Met a lot of Texas giants.

My father made sure.

We had FDR democrats voting in all elections.

The older ones started to die off.

New people moved toTexas .

Not the same Texas.

We had Lt. Governor Bill Hobby for 18 years.
