I was about to turn off the TV to head to work - it was on NBC and suddenly there was breaking news. And so it began...

(47,259 posts)is those who lost people have to relive that day over again. Many have said that they wish people would tone it down, as they are trying to heal and move on. I think we've all heard and told the "Where were you on 9/11" stories more than enough.
After the first few years, I stopped watching television coverage commemorating the day.

(11,559 posts)Turn it into a great sales op for mattresses or something. They even had a built-in tag line. Remember Tod Beamer and his catch phrase - "Let's roll?" I had awful audio running in my head like "Let's roll.....out the savings!!!"
I guess there is a line that even the most crass won't cross, thankfully.

(47,259 posts)It was bad enough the republicans used 9/11 shamelessly for political purposes and to justify increased military spending. We certainly didn't need a "Patriot's Day".

(1,849 posts)I was in first grade, in a gifted program where we studied everything including the civil rights movement and current events. It impacted me greatly.
I was in NYC on 9/11. I saw it. I went back recently, and did not go to the memorial although I thought about it. I saw the towers go up as they were built, and I saw them fall. I was there.
BumRushDaShow
(128,438 posts)I was also in 1st grade - had just turned 6 a few months earlier, and that same week just after the assassination, the school had asked if anyone had anything that referenced MLK to use as a sortof makeshift memorial, and my parents happened to have had a print that was part of a stylized series of water colors sold to them by one of their neighbors, that documented various moments and aspects of the Civil Rights Movement. The one they had included a description on the back mentioning Rosa Parks but featured central image of MLK, with other images of protesters around the outer edge. It was offered to the school for a special assembly that they had. The framed print ended up on an easel in the middle of the stage in the auditorium with a black sash draped around it.
As a fed at the time of 9/11, everyone was watching it on the TV in one of the conference rooms. We had all been through the major change in security posture after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 and figured what we would be in for this go-around. And not long after 10 am ET, they told us to go home, and I headed to my mom's, going like 70 mph on my usual commute out of the downtown area while listening to the radio in the car as Dan Rather was covering the event, when he eventually and incredulously reported the 2nd tower falling.
One of my cousins worked in one of the towers at the time but she ended up taking off work that day by odd circumstance (she lived in Jersey and normally commuted there every day).

(6,228 posts)Just an observation. I have come to the idea they were all done for the same reason. The same thing we are immersed in now. Social justice. I'm sure I'm no where near the only one who thinks this way. Just a thought.

(5,810 posts)Our lives are littered with things that hurt us and are tragedies. Most are not on the scale of 9/11 but they hurt and cause us to suffer. Some of us suffered personally on 9/11 while others grieved in a slightly different way. It was a loss of innocence to see our country attacked in that way and coupled with the loss of life compounded the betrayal.
But from a psychological standpoint, I do not appreciate being manipulated to relive that day. The promos have been on all week with clips from the event being shown on various programs. To avoid it 100% would mean not watching any of the news channels, including local news. So even though I have no intention of watching any of the special programming today, it has been on already throughout this week.
From a mental health perspective, I dont think reliving the day is particularly good for those who actually lost loved ones that day or the rest of us who had a different kind of loss. Grief and loss are part of the human experience. We learn to incorporate the experience into our lives but move on. There will be more losses to endure, some big, others less impactful. So visiting the graves on special days seems reasonable if we lost a loved one that day. Pausing for a moment of silence to remember the losses for the rest of us seems respectful but not maudlin. But to rewatch the planes hit the towers and burn to the ground seems far too much. Leave that for the history books because that is what it is. Part of our history. We must move on to get out of grief and loss toward a more normal life. I do not want to remain stuck in that terrible, sad place that we were in 20 years ago.

(21,774 posts)Instead, I'm going to the closest thing to a county fair in my area, the Yorktown Grange Fair.
There will be a 9/11 rememberance flag raising done by the local troop of Boy Scouts, but that's it. I'm going because I've always wanted to see an antique classic tractor display and parade, plus demonstrations of oxen pulling and draft-horse pulling.
Yes, while Westchester County (NY) is mostly suburban, we do have our rural regions as you go north, with farms and orchards. All part of that moveable feast known as the Hudson Valley.

(86,323 posts)It's all about reverence but it's so laden with this worship style that I can't stomach it. I know people who were in the buildings, I was far away but suffered the plight of anyone with tanner than pearly white skin afterward. We have declined as a society ever since.

(1,910 posts)The Bush administration had a priority report on their desk that Bin Laden was planning an attack using airplanes. They ignored it. Then our reaction of Iraq when Randi Rhodes and others were yelling there were no weapons and it was a war ploy. Then Afghanistan, so many dead.
Then the stupid security theater at air ports. Followed by draconian laws. And a 20 year profit campaign by the military idustrial complex.
Instead of using the trillions to make our infrastructure the best on earth, instead of improving our intelligence capabilities, we reacted like a country of rabid fools.
Those who had loved ones lost that day should grieve like anyone who lost any loved one does on the day their loved one passed. But the rest of the country should see it as the start of our national humiliation.

I put two candles in the window, share the good works of DU-er Symbolman, Jon Stewart, Michael Moore, and Black Sabbath; confront the irony of probably not ever becoming a DU-er if 9/11 had been just another day; and pat myself on the back for my eternal vigilance against being seduced or intimidated by the rightwing machine.
And then, I just proceed to get on with my life.

(3,491 posts)Caught myself watching something on PBS following some of the kids who lost their fathers on 9/11. Most of them had almost no memory of them. Many of them didn't seem to ask a lot of questions about their missing parent. Guess either they've heard too much or didn't want to upset other family members.
To me, that's the day when most politicians ran and hid, our military seemed inept (except those at the Pentagon who had to deal with the attack first hand) and ordinary citizens had to face some of the most horrible experiences war can bring. Instead of holding politicians accountable we just started wars to prevent any self reflection of what the talking heads in Washington had done over the previous decades. Then we squandered trillions of dollars fighting continuous wars and ignoring our citizens health care needs, rising inequity, racial prejudice or taking steps to address climate change.
The 9/11 wars have left a trail of broken soldiers who are severely traumatized by their experiences and some who have become a danger to society. And the politicians who have given us this live in mansions with bank accounts stuffed with millions of dollars (all made on government salaries), make regular appearances on TV justifying their existence and never seem to have one ounce of regret for what they've done.

(6,226 posts)It was shockingly sad and I won't forget. I'll reflect on it, but I will not watch it today over and over again. A woman on our local news who lost her son that day, told how every year on 9/11 it's like ripping a scab off. I believe I understand.

Its already been more than enough, and in some ways quite sickening frankly. To be fair though, there has been some well crafted, thoughtful journalism that put the whole of 9/11 in a global, humankind context this past week. Nevertheless, at almost the very same time that the Robert E. Lee statue came down in Roanoke, it is striking to sense American imperialism being celebrated in much of the mainstream coverage.
