(13,810 posts)Dubya stampeded and deceived the country into an unnecessary war in Iraq, disgracefully using that war mongering as an election tool to help Republicans. That war led to the creation of ISIS, which had its origins in Iraq. In turn, that led to savage acts of terrorism and a refugee crisis. In turn, that led to the nationalism that spawned Brexit and Trump. Dubya is Trump's political father.
Dubya created Guantanamo. Dubya supervised a dramatic rise of the "security state," rife with mere "security theater" and paranoia. Dubya tortured. Dubya started the nation building in Afghanistan...
It's good to hear Dubya "carefully" call out nativism and discrimination against Muslims and refugees in a speech. But if he really wants to atone, he's going to have to do a lot better than that.

(8,847 posts)By the end you could see him finally beginning to realize how badly he had been used by others around him, and how stupid he had been.
This is not to say I feel sorry for him, or am praising him in any way.
He was always just a pretty frat boy who was never worthy of any of the governmental positions he held.
But, in the end, he did start to become self-aware...a big step for him.
I'm happy to see him stand up for the nation, and reject the party of Trump that the Republicans have transformed into.
I wonder if he realizes how much of that shit was present in the party all the time that he was active politically. I also wonder if he realized how much damage he did to the nation with his "war on terror" that was never done to defeat terrorism, only to give the electorate the impression the Republicans truly wanted to end terrorism.
The illusion of a "war on terror" kept their base stirred up and helped them not only stay in power, but get rich in the meantime.
It also eventually grew into a Republican base that was not much different from the terrorists the Republican leadership claimed to be fighting.
We can thank the Republicans for nurturing fear, anger, hatred and even violence in a segment of the American Public that has now become the American Taliban; advocates of Christian Sharia.

(4,575 posts)appointed to the Supreme Court. Bush's appointment at their hands left a crack in our democracy that opened the door for everything that happened in the last 20 years. There were times on this forum when we wondered if he was responsible for 9/11. His administration left a big, ugly stain on this country that we are still trying to deal with. His remarks today are laudable. I think he believes what he is saying. 45 certainly makes him look like a far better president than he actually was. I'll never forget him sitting in that classroom with his eyes darting around looking like he was wondering who screwed him over and his inaction for however long after costing precious time in our response.
